Wisdom teeth extraction

Sign in to disble this ad
Well im getting surgery to remove my bottom wisom teeth, im not so worried about the upper ones because they are completely out.

However, the bottom ones are showing just barely and leaning forward so i have my doubts about the procedure and i would like to know wha tmy fellow bassists went through when they got theirs removed.

Would you be kind enough and share your experiences?

it really wasn't that bad. I had all 4 of mine cut out (not pulled) at the same time, they were all pretty severely impacted. There's a good deal of swelling and plenty of bleeding, but the pain is mild imo and gives you an excuse to lounge around for a couple days. The pain meds they prescribed me did nothing for me, some good ol ibuprofen hit the spot. Be sure to pace yourself as far as eating, although you'll surely have an easier time with just 2 out as opposed to all 4. Also stay away from activities that involve any kind of sucking/blowing with your mouth, as that can cause the blood clots in your sockets to become dislodged

I had my bottom right pulled and it was horrible, I am sorry to say. It hurt really bad and they had to try to pop it out 4 or 5 times.
I think it really depends on your dentist and how your do the procedure. I just got that shot of lidocaine or whatever, and I regretted it.

I dont know if they are going to be pulled or cut out, but still, i know i gotta pace myself and im going to take advantage of that because i wanna get rid of my beer belly, but yea its like mixed emotions, i wanna see what it is like and at the same time i fear the unknown.. i have never been under anesthesia or a knife before =)

They put me under, cause I the gums cut to get to the teeth. It didn't hurt, and I have my wisdom teeth somewhere still that I need to make into a necklace.

It is very difficult to play bass while suffering (Oh yeah, that was suffering all right from the effects of Codine, however....

Got all four extracted in one sitting. Took about an hour total.
I got shot with Novicaine to completely numb my mouth, and then got to trip on laughing gas while listening to my MP3 player.

I recommend the laughing gas, because you are fully aware of what they're doing even though you don't feel the pain (e.g. you can feel the buzzing of saws, feel the pressure when they're ripping bones out of your jaw with pliers, hear the sounds of your bones crunching, etc.). The gas makes you not give a ****.

I felt fine for about 2 hours after, because I was still numb. After that, I got really sore. Nothing too unmanageable, but it definitely hurt.

Then I got a dry socket. Pain. Lots and lots of intense spiking pain. The kind that makes you fall to your knees gripping whatever is at hand until your fingernails get bloody.

once I recovered from the dry socket, it went back to dull soreness. For the most part, the vicoden did little to nothing to abate it. By the third day, I was pretty much fine, but my jaws would hurt every time I tried to eat something big.

Had all 4 taken out at once. It hurt like a ***** whenever I tried to sleep for about 3 days and I couldn't eat normally for about 5, but it wasn't too bad overall. Apparently I cuss like a sailor and hit on anything with knockers when I'm on anesthesia as well.

I had one out after I developed a huge (tennis-ball-sized) abscess. That was painful as the infection blocked the blood flow (and therefore the anaesthetic) to the tooth. 9 ampules of novocaine later I was still screaming my head off as they broke the tooth to remove it. I felt everything.

The other three came out without a problem and negligible pain, so my advice is get them out now before they cause problems.

Dry socket is not fun. Avoid it by not sucking anything (cigarettes, straws, etc) for at least a week after having the teeth removed. Sucking pulls the blood clot away from the bone and leaves it exposed. If you do get it, clove oil is your friend.

While I haven't had (and probably won't have) my wisdom teeth removed, I can relate to the experience. I had a cavity that got way out of hand as a kid (really way out of hand).

I mean, I was not quite as hygienic then as I am now (), so I had faced cavities before. The only problem with that was the fact that being a kid, no one believes you when you say the Novocain isn't working. As such, I had already had two teeth filled, sobbing and in pain the whole time. For this tooth they had to grind away the edge to make a better filling.

They got halfway done grinding away that tooth before they got the message that I was in a lot of pain (I punched a nurse hard in the gut while flailing my arms).

Since then, I've taken pains to inform my dentist that I'm a "hard numb" so, in case I need Novocain, they do it right.

I decided to get put under and get all 4 at once. (Man, that IV drip knocks you out SUPER fast!!! They had me count down from 10 and I didn't make it to 9.)

Day 1 was pretty weird but once I got the oxycodone pill down, I enjoyed looking at my ceiling for the next 36 hours. I had a gig up a snowy mountain the next evening and was afraid my face might explode, but I pulled through. (Got off the oxy after that with half the bottle left unused.)

I ate a lot of soft foods and was sore for a long time. I got especially tired of having to clean the pouches out (where the teeth used to be). But everything got back to normal eventually, so I have no regrets.

My dad removed all four of mine in one sitting. This was around a year ago. They numb you up completely so you don't feel anything besides the shots. Just a lot of movement and pressure. You'll be back to 100% in a weeks time. Don't stress and look forward to the vicodin!!!

So is there a possibility that you can have wisdom teeth and not be required to get them removed?

I wish so because I think I have something brewing behind my molars and I've already experienced the pains of several painful dental procedures
