Working Pros: Would You Play Bass FOR FREE????

Sign in to disble this ad
I have decided to make as much money as humanly possible as a professional musician by providing exceptional services (and antics) for FREE. To kids. To anyone that CARES.

I will only consider large iced coffees as payment for my services.

What would you do for free?

Read the sentiments on this blog and feel free to contribute to my vision with your own thoughts.

No. I don't work for free.
EDIT: I'll elaborate. If it's for Church or charity or benefit, etc... I will play for free. It has to be a good cause. Since I play professionally, it's my livelihood. I love music but it's also my job, so I don't like doing it for free.

Let's get a list of reasons of why all of you WOULD "work" for free and why you WON'T "work" for free.

I'd work for free if I was a porn star. Relax style is too much of a service to the good of humanity.

It depends, I have and will work for free for,

1. Friends and family
2. Causes I believe in
3. Charity events
4. A church (if it is my church)
5. If it will pay off in other ways (exposure, trade, etc)

I sometimes play for free. It's called rehearsal. And I sometimes get paid for that.

I play in my own Church for free and consider it a contribution in service to my church. I also get the opportunity to play some great material with some of the best musicians in the city. So it's worth it as an education.

I also do church gigs for free, and I've played a couple of charity events in my years that were free monetarily, although there were still a lot of perks. As a bassist, I sometimes play for free, but as a bandleader, I never play for free.

Every gig I do is for free, at least the playing part. However, I get paid to set up and tear down.

I would not do it for free if it were my full time job! but as I do it for fun, I play all the time for free. It is a rare occasion that I am paid, but I like it when i am!

AMEN! I get paid for the 22.5 hours off stage when on tour; the drive to and from the gigs and for set-up, tear down and maintaining my basses.
I'll do church services in HIS church when I get the call to serve whether my home church or another. ....

It depends on who, or what, I'm playing for. If I'm playing at a venue that is going to be making money off of me, or my band, I'd want a cut.
If playing for free will help me get paying work in the future, I sure will.
If its for a friends party, we'll work for beer, like we always do.
If its for charity, sure, why not?

the scene in hawaii is really horrible so my band takes whatever gig we can get. out of the 20 shows we've played in the past 8 months, 4 were benefit shows, and only one was a paid gig (which we used the money to put together a demo). the way we look at it, the other 15 were just ways to get exposure. pretty much the only way to get paid as a musician in hawaii is to be part of a cover, reggae, or hawaiian band.

Would you go into a studio and record bass tracks for FREE?

What's the incentive of doing a music-related service for FREE?

What is your "free-threshold" and where do you draw that line?

it seems most peeps that are otherwise money hungry heathens - have a change of heart and play for free, to kids, for church.

probably because built into the foundation of the ideology itself is an expectation of charity work - for free - to kids - for the church. which of course the church can skim off the top.

so you can either label the work you do for free - to kids as charity or better yet "giving" and write it off the way the good christians et el do.

OR - and this is MY personal preference. Start your own church and have others do work for free- to kids - for YOU.

Fistianity = giving.
