from what i read about that it was a nice democratic decision. if they're happy, that's enough for me. now let's see if they don't screw it up with a civil war in 20 yrs..

While this may be a good step towards peace in that region, on paper, at least, I fear that it will do little more than change the terminology used from civil war to multi-national war. I really hope I'm wrong.

I lived in the north of Sudan as a graduate student for my dissertation research. I can say that there is a kinship between the people of the two regions. I hope the day comes when the relationship between the two countries is like that between the USA and Canada.

Good for them and a long road to this result.

I remember seeing a 2009-2010 movie (i can't remember the name. ) about Darfur. Sad and incomprehensible how people can be so evil to one another.

I really wish them well. The folks there truly deserve peace and freedom... I just hope that they get it. A new country is sometimes a shaky thing indeed, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they really make this one work and work well.

The first thing that popped into my mind when I read the news about the creation of Southern Sudan was that Dr. Cheese would make a thread about it on TB

Just hope this is a step towards peace. Read and heard about the debate regarding Abyei: hope it doesn't get ugly.

I hope the 2 countries will learn to work together. Their economies are very intertwined.

I'm hopeful, but not optimistic. I rarely seem to hear anything but bad news coming out of the African continent.

And that's a damn shame too because there ARE success stories in Africa. I really don't comprehend the media sometimes..
