They deal with prior service differently according to quotas. If lots of seats are open, they're more willing to let you in. (They were quite obviously really hungry when I got the gig) If recruiting is good, they close it off.
Still, the Navy thing will be good for you, man! You'll have some awesome times! |

Lackland was upfront and said no priors before the audition, but Langley asked me to fly out. The competition was pretty stiff with a guy who tours with that famous circus and a female with a degree from The New School. They said I was qualified, but they went with the non-prior female, who I'm guessing could play her ass off...and she was pretty cute, so I don't really blame'em. Freaking AF always cherry-picks the hotties, ya know!
Hopefully, I get to do some travel with the Navy. I'd love going to one of those bands in Japan or Italy.

I wish this were always the case. I've been stationed on nothing but Army bases since I joined the Navy, only one of which had a beach.

I know at least one of the bass players at each of those bands (Naples & Japan), as well as Jacksonville, Rhode Island, and then I'm at Great Lakes.

I just had the coolest experience today. we had the yokota AFB middle school advanced band come to the band hall for lessons/master classes and some pizza. I was thinking that I would have the day off because what middle school has a bass player! There was a 6th or 7th grader with a gig bag and I got to hang out with a really cool up and coming bassist. Here is where things get interesting. She starts talking about her dad....a bass player.....in virginia beach......works for the navy used to be in the army. I got to give lessons to my instructors daughter; and half way around the planet no less!! talk about a small world! |

On a side note: I have orders to report to the Navy Forces Europe Band in Naples, Italy next month. Should be a fun time traveling and playing, if there's still a budget for that sorta thing. =D
