Ok, so here's the story. My cousin received scholarship money totaling roughly $120,000, which is more than enough to pay for tuition and housing for all four years. He even got a laptop stipend and early registration and all that. Before that, he worked all throughout high school and has a good chunk of money saved up for a college kid. He's essentially going to school at no cost to his parents whatsoever.
To reward him, his dad's buying him a brand new BMW 335i. Would you say that he deserves it or his dad is just spoiling him? |

I'm sure he will be viewed as spoiled, and I think a new Beemer for a freshman would unfortunately be a target from upperclassmen, I'd leave it at home to be honest. To each their own. I consider it a bit of poor judgement on the Dad's part, I would wait until the end of his college education, but whatevs.

Instead of blowing the money on a car, they should leave it in savings for when he graduates. |

It's most probably how he acts that determines whether people consider him spoiled or not, rather than his wheels.
Without knowing a squat about him or his dad, I'd say his dad helped him. A lot.
If a persons ride (or lack of it) determines his/her place in US school system, I have yet another thing to feel sorry for You Americans.

But spoiled generally constitutes an attitude rather than material gifts. |

Me personally? I'd probably put some of that $50k into savings for after school, as it would cover pretty much everything you could possibly need to get started on your own in the real world.
But then again, its not my money. If he wants a car then more power to him. He sounds like he earned it.

On the other hand, I don't think it's a good idea for a college student to be driving one. Something economical would be a better choice. Maybe a fully loaded Prius or similar type of vehicle would suffice. As mentioned above, save that money for when he graduates. He's gonna need it. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
