Well, would you? I'm tallking about in any situation, such as if you're on the bus and you see a screaming child misbehaving or on the street.

As kids we used to live in fear of being caught screwing up by a neighbor. It was pretty much equal to getting busted by your folks.

Today you'd probably get sued by the little brat's parents for raising your voice to their beloved little monster.

I know what you mean. Even when I was little, it used to be that if we were outside with any of our neighbours, they'd tell us off if we did something wrong.

I would and I have.

One time there were these two kids running up and down the aisle at a restaurant. They almost collided with the waitress and the parents did nothing! On their way back past our booth I put out my hand and stopped them. I looked them in the face and said "Stop running. Do you understand?" They nodded, walked back to their booth and didn't get up again.

Another time there were two kids yelling and screaming on the train. I looked at them and said "we are inside. We use our inside voices when we are inside." and they stopped. (and a couple of passengers thanked me!)

There are others. But no parent has ever said anything to me for reprimanding their kid. And I guess when I use my Teacher voice, kids listen.

If you tried that where I live, you'd likely get shouted down or get a mouthful of abuse...

+1. I have never had a parent challenge me either. Many have thought about it, but none have. I used Jedi mind tricks on them.

Yes. If they are endangering someone's or their own life, definetly. If they are just acting like meatheads, yes. But sometimes it's fun to stand back and watch the (sometimes nasty) end to thier screwing around, and then remind them.

I just draw my sword, point it at the mother and and say in a loud, booming voice..........SILENCE THE CHILD!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, last year, I took one of my sons BIG friends and tied him in a not. I'd asked him to quit running his mouth about 5 times and using foul language around my daughter and her friends. After roughing him up real good, I made him SCREAM uncle with a nice arm bar None of the boys have crossed me since. I know the boys parents very well so no big deal. I was PISSED and probably should have shown a wee bit more restraint

Oh, and to me, most parents are kinda glad when someone else corrects there kid, because it's more embarrasing to have a complete stranger correct you than your mom or something. They usually stop too.

I think this should be the norm. Seriously, we need to pass some social vigilante laws that not only make this behavior acceptable, but expected.

For example, if a kid starts screaming in a restaurant, the parents have exactly two minutes to silence their child or remove them from the room before I do it for them.

The same principle can be applied to bad drivers or drivers that think everybody on the block wants to hear their music. They get one warning, and if they don't comply, they get run off the road.

Bit extreme isn't it?

Yes, I have.. I would.. and I will again, I'm sure. Do I like doing that? No I don't derive any pleasure tellin' some kid what he/she should already know.. they become embarrassed usually... but if someone doesn't tell 'em they are messing up, they will continue to do whatever it was that caught my attention in the first place.

Oh yeah I do it all the time...of course with my students in the classroom but it has become habit...I'll do it anywhere.

I just announce in an extra loud voice: " Hey! Your parent(s) must be very proud of your rude behavior." It usually gets a response.

Lost it once...

After watching my friends 8 year old start to throw their little dog into my pool for the SECOND time - I lost it. "Do not throw the dog in the f***ing pool!" - she certainly backed down, but boy I felt awful/angry/guilty... It wasn't pretty.

I had to go chill off after that. Not certain who I was more pissed at - my friend's daughter or my friend for ignoring her cruel behavior and antics. Another reason I don't have kids. Don't have the patience.

I only feel justified getting involved under three circumstances:

1. The child's actions are directly affecting me
2. They're directly affecting someone I'm directly associated with
3. They're coming dangerously close to hurting themselves or others.

If any of those three circumstances apply, the kid is fair game.

Definitely, i think too many kids are treated too nicely and get away with too much already, if their parents don't do it and it gets in my way, no hesitation. If i remember correctly, one comedian called the problem "child worship".
