I always disparaged it until a friend won a birthday party at a bar in town. She invited me. I went and discovered that the place where they put the 'free party winners' was out on the back deck where the karaoke was. She was going up to sing over and over and having a blast. She even started picking songs without looking: opening the book pointing out a song and having someone else write out the request card, so that she would find out what the song was when it started. It should have been awful. But A.) She's an excellent singer. and B.) She was obviously having a blast.
This all happened just a year or two after my old band finally gave up, so it was nice singing in front of people again, and I sounded so mych better than the drunks that the crowd would go nuts for me.
So I was hooked.
