I've watched Shaun White for awhile now, but last night it became apparent the level at which he excels is beyond anyone else in snowboarding. Super smooth, and crazy height. Amazing to watch. This is both his Gold Medal run, AND his victory lap. http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/ass...hite+wins+gold

Not taking anything away from Shaun but not only is his snowboarding at another level, so is the preparation behind the scenes.

...and the nice thing is he seems to be a goofy, very down to earth sort of guy, except when he's 20ft off the top of the half pike that is. |

Same for Lindsey Vonn - complete preparation, complete focus. Most humans can't attain that level of concentration.
I think the same thing happens with mogul skiers - I cannot imagine how a human can see and act as quickly as they do. Most of us can't even come close to those kinds of perceptions and reactions.
Wonderful stuff to watch last night - I was glued to the set.

And about the cussing, one of his coaches gave him this wierd motivational speech dealy and told him something along the lines of 'stomp the s*$& out of that half pipe'. No biggie, but I bet a ton of people saw it.

That as a great day of winter sports all the way around though. |

I have been following him since he was a nobody tearing up the slopes and skateboard halfpipes. My favorite quote about him was said by Tony Hawk when they were doing a skateboard demo together, Shaun was about 16 or 17 at the time "I don't even know what to call that trick". He is only 23, I can't wait to see where he goes.

The fact that he was able to better it - even when he didn't have to - is just phenomenal. He really made everyone else look pretty bad.
As it was with the double-cork, the rest of the snowboarders are going to be spending a lot of time trying to learn SW's latest trick. In the meantime, SW will be raising the bar...again. It's going to be a while before anyone catches the Flying Tomato.
Seeing Vonn drop an equally dominating performance yesterday was just awesome. |

Seeing Vonn drop an equally dominating performance yesterday was just awesome. | Actually it was Justin Lamerioux that landed the first double cork in competition, not White. Too bad Justin was having an off day yesterday.

I hear there was some cussing that NBC let on the air. Anybody hear what was said? | Yeah. The coach and him were talking right before his victory lap. The coach said something like "you've already won now just go have fun. Just fn put out there." No big deal. I didn't see any morally offended people melting in my neighborhood. |

lowsound | I appreciate the correction. NBC's coverage tends to be a bit misleading sometimes.
A LOT of people looked like they were having an off day compared with Shaun's performance.

I was blown away! The height he got on his first trick was jaw-dropping! and that was probably the least impressive thing he did in that run!
I can't watch the video you linked to yet and I missed his gold medal run last night - but I am sure it's mind bending! I'll check it when I get home.
