Wow, I'm freakin' diabetic!

I had to go for a DOT physical. I gave them a urine sample and the doc came back in and told me we can't go any further. I have an appointment with my doctor in the morning. Until I get this under control I can't work!

That sucks! Hopefully it can be easily managed. My grandmother was diabetic and it can be very hard on your body. Will you be able to collect any disability while you can't drive?

My father (now 60) has been T1DM since he was ~17. It's a bitch of a disease, can be quite hard on those around you too.

Take care of yourself and do the best you can to keep it under control.

I don't know anything on the subject. The guy that gave me a physical said it could be a week or maybe even two before I could get it down to an acceptable level. I have some sick days, etc.

Nope, they did a test strip, then a blood meter. My level was 381.

Presumably it's Type 2 then? Have you tried approaching your doctor and asking about fasting? If you have only recently become T2 diabetic (not just recently discovered), then massive diets have been shown to totally reverse the insulin resistance.

(when I say massive, it was 2-3 months of only ~500 calories per day, I'll find the paper at work tomorrow if you are interested in approaching your Dr about it).

My mom has had Type 1 Diabetes since after she was pregnant from my little brother (20 years or so).
She lives a completely normal life, just has to shoot insulin twice a day.

Type 2 can be influenced a lot by diet, exercise and weight control, might be worth re assessing your diet and lifestyle...

Type 2 Diabetes is nothing to sneeze at but also not the end of the world. Often times it can be managed with diet (nothing radical or extreme) and exercise. Sometimes it is managed through oral medications, sometimes through injections of insulin or an insulin substitute.

Do not panic. Just listen to your doctor and if your doctor tells you to see a nutritionalist, take that advise seriously and do it.

Type 2 is a life-style change, not a death sentence.

I have made the decision to let this be a positive. I'll lose weight and feel better.

Type I or Type II? Good thing about Type II is that if you lose weight, then you can usually reverse it. If you don't it's manageable, but you need to be very careful about managing it.

If he was told it's take a week or two for his blood sugar levels to drop I'm sure it'll have to be T2.

I can relate to the fact that your life has changed. It doesn't have to change everything and some changes can help oneself focus one's mind.

But big physiological changes are still one heckuva upside the head.

But seriously, If it's T2 it will make changes to your diet, but it's not that big a deal. Type 1 runs on both side of my family so I've been tested fairly frequently.

The old '70's glucose tolerance test. Fasting for 12-24 hours followed by 6-8 hrs of blood and urine samples about every 30 mins. Good times..

I was diagnosed a type 2 diabetic years ago. No medication for me just watch my diet. It's a life style change when it comes to eating.

My advise is see a dietitian/nutritionists before you do anything. Everybody is different when it comes to being diabetic.

Look at your weight. Look at what you eat. Remember the Aktins diet from a while back? It might be your best friend.

Many of these cases are controllable. Most. Also have them check your thyroid function. Even a sub clinical thyroid result should be addressed. Make them do it.

Look at the lab work. Educate yourself.

Here's a link to the paper I mentioned previously. It may be worth taking a copy along to your Dr when you go to see them and discuss if it's applicable.

Went to my Doc. I have a prescription for some oral meds. Got a meter. Yesterday it was 381, I tested for the first time on my own a while ago at 295.
