Xbox 360 - HDMI help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

I recently purchased an HDMI cable for my Xbox 360. I admit, I know very little when it comes to HDMI cables, but I figured I could just plug straight from my 360 to my TV. It worked, but now I have another problem.

I've got a surround sound set up and really am not sure what to do to get sound going from the TV to the receiver using the HDMI cable. We've got RCAs running from the TV into the receiver now, and that works for every other input in the TV, but not the HDMI cable.

Anyway idea on what to do?

I think this is a fairly common problem. I had the same issue myself. My understanding is that when the HDMI input is "on", the other outputs are off. In order to do what you want, you need to have a A/V receiver which your Xbox runs through rather than direct to the TV. Assuming you don't have one like this (I don't either), then you should run RCA's out of your xbox directly into the receiving (or an A/V switch box). Its very frustrating, but that's the only solution I could find (other than coming up with the money for a better A/V surround receiver.

Alternatively, you could take this red pen and write.....

Xbox 360 hdmi-do i need seperate hdmi cable and audio cable? is it worth the extra $ to use hdmi?
just bought an xbox 360 and it has the hdmi connection. i would like to use an hdmi cable to take advantage of my tv's hd capability. do i need a seperate cable for the audio to run through my surround sound receiver? how would i be able to get the hdmi picture and use my surround sound at the same time? will it be worth the extra $ to use the hdmi cable as opposed to the standard a/v cable? thanks.

As far as spending the extra $$ on HDMI, I quote:

HDMI is an all-digital, uncompressed interface. What that means is that the audio and video signal remains in its purest state from the source to the display. And since it's not converted from digital to analog and back again, and since it's not compressed, this means that the consumer gets the highest quality signal possible and a future-proof technology that has no dependency on compression schemes like MPEG.

The HDMI cable carries both audio & video but if you are using a surround sound receiver then you will have to use that extra audio cable. The best way to take advantage of your situation is to hook up the HDMI cable from your XBox to your TV. Then hook up your TV's audio output to an audio input on your surround sound receiver.
That way you can get the best HD picture with HDMI, and still get the surround sound features from the XBox games.
By the way, don't believe all that hype about gold plating on those really expensive HDMI cables. I replace those for customers all the time and use cheap generic HDMI cables that look exactly the same on the TV.
