Xbox 360 vs. PS3

Sign in to disble this ad
I want one of these for Christmas, which would you say is most owrth it? The new slim 360 or the new slim PS3?

I owned both consoles before wayyy back and sold them, and I loved them both.

I LOVE Xbox Live and playing online, but I also love BluRay.

I say Xbox. Better games, better online, better controller. Marketplace is killer, streaming HD movies and TV shows is the cat's arse.

BluRay is a valid point, but if you want a BluRay player, get a BluRay player.

Xbox 360 = Great online play, no good exclusive games
PS3 = OKAY online play, very good exclusive games, blu ray

Xbox 360 has (or had) Halo, and Gears of War
Ps3 has Uncharted 1 & 2, Demon's Souls, God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 1 & 2, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, Infamous,
(based on exclusives rated 9+/10 on IGN)

Comes down to: if you only want to play Halo and Call of Duty online, get the Xbox, if you want to have choice, get a ps3.

Exclusive games are a point, but they are happening less and less. FFXIII is cross platform, Fable III is cross platform iirc, MGS 5 will be cross platform to my knowledge.

It also depends on whether or not the exclusives are a deal breaker for you.

The major decision maker in my opinion is: What consoles do your friends have?

If they all have a 360, and you want to play with them, there is no point getting a PS3.

I personally play video games on PC

Basically.

If you plan on playing online a lot with friends xbox has the advantage.

The 360 has/had fantastic exclusives (Halo, Mass Effect, Dragon Age), but the PS3 has God of War.

I don't have the use for a blu-ray, but if you have to have one, or if thats a deal breaker, go PS3.

Another bit about the 360 is that it gets patches, fix's, and DLC before the PS3 on cross platform games. It was always nice to laugh at my brother because they still hadn't patched World at War when I would go home.

Also Sony took Linux off the PS3, it may not be a selling point for you, but that was the final straw for me.

Strictly a matter of personal preference, I prefer the games on PS3, multiplayer is not a concern for me, Playstation Network is free. And I like that I don't need a seperate Blu-ray player.

All of my friends have ps3's. I suggest you look at the features of both. What kind of games do you prefer to play?

Bungie is most likely done with Halo, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age are on the PS3.

When it comes to fixes and DLC, it was true 2 years ago (GTA, Fallout 3), but right now they pretty much get done at the same time. For all I know, the ps3 versions Red Dead Redemption and the new Assassin's Creed had DLC before the 360s.

But yeah, pretty much what everyone else says! If you value Online play more, than 360. If you don't care much for Halo and online, then Ps3.

What do your friends have.. If the majority have 360's go with that for the ability to play online and borrow games.

the Wii does not count as a serious gaming system.

I managed a gamestop and can tell you what I saw first hand with dealing with customers before and after a system purchase.

PS3....
PROS - built in bluray
controllers are light weight and rechargable
all systems offer wireless net connection
FREE online play
accepts normal hard drives so upgrading is very easy.
netflix streaming for ALL available netflix movies
great exclusive titles (gran turismo, god of war, little big planet etc.
better than average reliability for consumer electronics
CONS - you might prefer things like halo, fable, gears of war

XBOX360
PROS - exclusive titles like halo, fable, gears of war, plants vs zombies.. etc.
some think that online interaction is better

CONS - no bluray
controllers need extra purchase for recharging ability
WORST failure rate in the history of home gaming
depending on failure type they can destroy games
online requires paid membership
not all systems offer wireless net connect. if not its $100 for the adapter
hard drives are specific to xbox. you MUST purchase theirs to upgrade.

Back in the day id have said 360 wins hands down... however the exclusive titles have not only caught up for each system but ps3 has IMO surpassed 360.
Also with bluray being the success that it is this adds more weight to the ps3 as a value proposition.

I have personally witnessed customers on as many as 7 360 systems in 3 years. They simply break far too often to be a wise investment. Also the online play is the same for both these days. Playstation now offers a premium membership which costs basically the same as xbox... however with ps3 if you dont feel the need to pay for that you can still FULLY use the online services for every game...... free.

As much money as they make on that series... Done doesn't exist yet.

As far as the others are concerned, they were supposed to be exclusive, but after EA made one of their awesome (sarcasm) contributions to the video game industry... And it isn't that I don't like the fact they aren't exclusive, its that I don't like EA. They are an evil, evil corporation.

And Sony and the online play is still terrible on patches. I still go home and hear my brother complain about how an unbreakable hasn't been patched, or how come people are still able to get under the map. I have yet to encounter a lasting issue like that on the 360. Biased? Maybe. Based on experience? Completely.

If it was 3-5 years ago, with the likes of Bioshock, Mass Effect 1, Halo, and others being 360 only, I would say that hands down. But it isn't. Sony is getting more and more titles (thanks again, EA!) and they still have the built in blu-ray. Not to mention God of War is fantastic, and Gran Turismo is due to launch (finally)

And if you had plans of putting Linux on your ps3 (I did, and then they stripped users of that ability), you may want to look into that some more.

Exclusives-

Exclusives- Draw. Mass Effect isn't due out till January, Allen Wake, Fable, Gears of War, Splinter Cell, and Crackdown are all 360 exclusive. And some of those are/were fantastic games and series. The ps3 has God of War, Socom, LittleBig Planet, Resistance and Killzone to back its list of exclusives. I like some of both lists, and neither list enough to give it an edge.

Controller-

Draw again. I like the feel of the 360 controller. I have a plug n play and a usb controller. they both have their uses and accomplish them well. The ps3 controller isn't as easy to use on a computer, but it does have a built in battery as a wireless. The move and kinect controllers are due out soon, and those may swing this one way or another.

Console-

Slightly ps3. I've had a 360 get the RRoD, and my brother has lost 2 ps3's to the YLoD. Both have high failure rates (ridiculous if you ask me). I liked (notice past tense) the fact that I could put linux on a ps3, but that ability was taken away. The ps3 still has a blue ray, and that may be an edge to some people.

Online-

Xbox charges money, ps3 doesn't (unless its a pay to play, and EA has "plans" for those). I like live, I like the frequent updates and patches, and all of my friends are there. I'm going to remove myself from this one because of bias.

It all comes down to what you want out of it and what your friends have. We share games all the time, so if I had the other console, I'd be boned.

Unless you really want to do online gaming, I'd seriously consider the Wii. I've owened every system, and I yet I keep finding myself going back to the Wii simply because it's the most fun system of the three.

I think the wii is fun if you have multiple players in the house....... however the graphics are a joke.
Thats what I dont like about nintendo.... the wii and the DS are just laughable compared to the quality of other systems out there.

Bungie will no longer make Halo games - Reach was the last game as part of their agreement with Microsoft, and have said they've started on their next project. Not to fret though, Halo fans, as Microsoft snatched up a bunch of Halo designers (the important ones, anyway) from Bungie and formed 343 Studios, who will handle the Halo series from now on.

Personal preference from a part-time (at best) gamer?

PS3.

I had the "RRoD" (Red Ring of Death) on the same 360 on 3 different occasions, and ultimately decided to switch purely on that.

Since then, I have found that I like the controller for the PS3 FAR more, and the titles are about the same, with certain (noted above) exceptions. Free online play, and less rampant online ridiculous-ness.

YMMV and all that.
