XBox - repair or buy new one

Sign in to disble this ad
My kids X-box recently quit working, audio works, but no picture. It's about 3 years old. I've replaced all the cables and verified that the TV is working fine so its something internal in the X-Box. I called around and found a place that will send it off to be fixed for $50 + parts. I talked to another place and the guy there told me that its not worth repairing that they tend to become a money pit after about 2-3 years as things continue to break down, so its better to just buy a new one for $200.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or experience with getting them repaired versus just replacing it.

how much are they new? $50 plus parts could easily add up... i would see if you can sell the broken one and put that towards a new one with warranty.

Scrap it and tell your kids to go play outside. Then buy something nice for their mother. Maybe she'll let you tap that.

send it back for a free re-furbished one if it has the dreaded "RED RING OF DEATH"!!! microsoft was found liable for repair or replacement because of a manufacturing flaw that causes CPU mal-function. call the repair hotline and get an RMA started. gl.

Aye, send it in. I do not know about American legislation, but here stuff like that shall work for at least 5 years with expected use. If it does not, you can hustle those you bought it from and get it repaired for free. If the problem happens more than twice, you get a new one

I will agree they don't have the greatest games, but I mean their failure rate so far is the lowest I think, and no game has hooked me like a good Mario game. Or Donkey Kong, those are excellent...

in principal, i fully support this line of thinking.

however, my kids got their xbox (after much resistance from me) from their cousin. this was maybe 4-5yrs ago; it was a first generation. the guy gets things like that as soon as they come out. the catch was, it was now dead.

i accepted it as a project for me and my son. i went here:

http://www.llamma.com/

got knowledge and parts. had a friend with all the fancy little screw tips for working with electronics. we took the whole thing apart and replaced the hard drive (got one on sale, maybe $50-60). i enjoyed re-building the thing and it has worked ever since.
