We got about 1 foot, so nothing bad.
Friends on mine in CT got about 3 1/2'
That's a lot a snow to fall in one day, and that certainly doesn't happen every year.

The media in this country seems to be designed to drive people into fear and terror.

My brother is in eastern MA. The state banned driving there after 4:00 yesterday, I don't think they were just getting sucked into the hype. He is still one of the half a million without power. My parents live in eastern NH. The sea wall in Rye was breached and there was some heavy duty flooding, in addition to two feet of snow. As for stupidity, stupid is as stupid does . . .

It seems like your issue is more with The Weather Channel than with yankees. Now remind me where The Weather Channel is headquartered - wait, the intertubes have the answer - Atlanta, Georgia.

Now for some geography 101:

The area inhabited by a group of folks that you refer to as yankees is actually quite large. Some places are very snowy - Cleveland, Buffalo, etc, and 2 feet does happen every year. Some places get much less - NYC, Boston, Philly. Two feet doesn't happen every year where I live and snowstorms that drop 2" over a 10000 sq mile area, definitely doesn't happen every decade.

This storm was the fifth most in Boston's history. That is not an every couple of week storm. Since we don't get as much snow as we used to in Massachusetts - not everyone prepares as well as they should and as Greg noted - it is way better to be overprepared than underprepared. In '78, there were cars with people in them stuck on route 128; this year there weren't. I'd call that progress and if the price is 24/7 hyped-up weather forecasting from our good friends in Georgia and our local news; I'm OK with it.

I don't like the tone of the OP at all. Stupidity has nothing to do with it. Did the media overhype it? In some cases. But to the areas crushed by Sandy, this is serious and life threatening. Any major storm causes PTSD like anxiety to those who have suffered through that nightmare. And to those still living in houses without power, it's no joking matter.

My 90 year old mother in Long Island was terrified on Friday that she was going to lose power again. She was almost blue 3 months ago when I raced up there through the blackout right after Sandy to scoop her up and bring her south to safety. So try doing your homework and using some empathy the next time around before you insult people.

FYI - On July 6, 2008, NBC Universal (now owned by Comcast/General Electric), Bain Capital and Blackstone Group agreed to purchase the Weather Channel from Landmark Communications. That is why Al Roker is all over the Weather Channel and Weather Channel people are on The Today Show too.

To your point, there was griping about "media hype" in the early stages of the Sandy thread here, too. That quieted down when it turned out over 100 people were killed in the US by the storm.

I'm with you there. There are quite a few areas where people still don't have heat or electricity from Sandy. My building in lower Manhattan has no power, it (along with most others) is running on generator power.

I'm surprised at the judgement of the OP when he lives in an area that doesn't deal with weather of this scope.

In New England we don't have huge storms like this every week. Big storms like this happen once a winter usually, if at all. Last year I don't believe we got more than a foot of snow in any given storm. Usually at its worse, we'll just get hammered weekly with storms that approach a foot, and even then, it's usually every other or winter or so that we have weather like that.

Any overreaction is because when we get hit hard, we get hit hard. People lose power, sometimes for days. In 2008 we had an ice storm that knocked power out for a week or more in some areas..and at that, any perceived "overreaction" isn't because we don't know how to handle it, it's because if we don't prepare, we know how bad it can be. It's not like down south when you people get a few inches of snow or a glazing of ice and then accidents are rampant because you have no idea how to drive in it.

Here's what a lot of snow looks like. This is my mothers house in CT, and that's a full size outside door.

Anyone who doesn't recognize this storm for what it was (and talks about the 'media hype') frankly doesn't know jack-*** about 30" of snow, 6' snow drifts, hurricane-force blizzards, and 400k electric power outages in rural areas. I lived in rural Maine and when the power went off, you were buying time. You were 30 min away from the nearest anything; not to mention, some of you clearly don't understand that when the power goes out, you have no heat. Go turn on your AC and zip it.

Some of you, frankly, need to stick to what you know. I'm only talking frank because these storms are horrid. I satire over here in the snow belt but only because I've been through them.

I believe it was the Blizzard of '77 in Buffalo that left 11-12' snow drifts downtown.

Some people here really have no clue.

The irony is you are completely ignorant about the history of "media". You think the media is "hype" and "sensation" now? If you read a newspaper from the 18th or 19th century you would throw up.

I'd argue that anyone who lives in a rural area that is regularly hit by large snowstorms (say, like my hometown) - and doesn't have a contingency plan (either a generator, fireplace, or another place to stay) is woefully under prepared for where they live.

My hometown gets 110" of snow in an average winter, and usually has 3-5 days each winter with over 15" of snowfall in a 24 hour period.

I remember the power once being out for 10 days.

It happens - and if you live where it happens, you should expect it.

Did you never burn things as a kid?

As far as I know, fire doesnt require the power to be on.

Fire is not an indoor option without a fireplace/chimney. People who attempt indoor fires without proper ventilation die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sorry but with all the brain power some of yall have, the option of building a fire, given that flippantly, made me cringe.
