Got the call this morning; I'm headed to Iraq in a few weeks to do contract work. I've been before. I was in the Iraq invasion in 2003. It sucked huge back then. I did convoy security and QRF (quick reaction force). We slept on the ground, drank purified river water, ate MRE's and C-rats, went on missions that lasted for days at a time with no sleep, went weeks at a time without showers. But now I'll be going as a civilian. I'm kinda stoked to be getting out of here. Plus the pay is great. But I'm wondering how Iraq has changed since 03-04. Anyone been lately? When we got there in 03, there was nothing. It was ugly. But it started building up. I hear there are fast food places there now; among other things. I'll be going to Baghdad for the first month or so. The guy said that after that, I could go anywhere. I've been all over Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and spent some time by the Syrian border. I'm curious to hear about MWR specifically. If anyone has been there as a contractor, I would really like your opinion.

I was there for R&R...which basically means I was drinking Tuborg the whole time.
I didn't notice much of anything.

I was over there in '91 during the 1st go-around.Ive known a few guys who have recently came back--all military guys.Have gtten varying degrees of what it is like-mostly depends on what area, and what their jb was.As a civilian can you pack heat?If you can,I would. And be really really aware of what's goinf on,stay in the main areas, and try not to be alone or the only American in an area.Be safe and come back in one peice. The extra $$-you gonna buy gear with it when you come back?
