I used to dive there all the time in 84-85, then in a week had a curious sea snake "play" with me for about 2 minutes (I'm sure that I warmed the water around me, if you catch my drift) and a 17 foot great white was caught about 3 miles north of where I used to swim. (Off White beach near Camp Courtney).
Needless to say, I stayed out of the water after that point.

BTW, drinking off base is prohibited and no one is allowed out in town after 2200. Have fun |

Good thing I won't be there, then! I'll be in Tokyo (at Yokota), where that rule isn't in effect.

I am sure that making a rule and enforcing it are two different things everywhere. |

| I was at Kadena about 10 years ago and I only remember the beer machines. I was amazed at the usefulness!!

I want to surf down there on some of the outer islands. I've seen pics of good waves in tropical waters, with pine trees down to the beach. My wife and I also dive, so we want to hit it for that reason too. Next trip to Japan, in June, however will be occupied with my brother-in-laws wedding in Shizuoka in my wife's hometown. |

I don't remember there much waves at all on any part of the island (unless there was a typhoon going on, then I'd doubt that you'd want to be playing...we used to have to wear body armor if we went outside). The diving is flat-out amazing, however...I'd never done any in my life and the 1st time I dove in I was in a world that easily equaled anything I'd ever seen on Jacque Cousteau growing up.

It gets good. Izu peninsula is my favorite place so far. You gotta know where to go. Yep. That's what everyone says about the diving in Okinawa. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
