Are you ever stereotyped at school?

I am often stereotyped at school because of my long hair, my hobbies, and what I want to do in life(play music). I have been called everything from a hippie to an emo. Are you ever stereotyped like this?

Not really, but i regularly get stereotyped in OT. Only thing really was a guy thinking i was a stoner and asking me for weed and pills.

I used to have a massive fro, and then I cut my hair short. People in my high school thought I was some weird kid. But I go to community college now so you can't count that as school.

I often get pigeonholed into being "The awesome dude". I kinda go with it.

Yeah... It happens once in a while. Thank goodness everyone doesn't stereotype at college.

In high school my sister was known with all her teachers as being really smart kid....and when I hit the scene 2 years after her, they expected the same from me. However, in high school I didn't care because it was high school, and I really didn't care....or study until I hit college...that's where I really kicked in haha.

For me, high school was nothing but a joke, and that's what I treated it as, nothing serious. I just coasted my way though and now, I'm in the same place in college as I would be if I studied my brains out. And, I have the career lined up that I want for when I graduate college, I couldn't be happier.

Yes, I was the weird one. Not that I cared much, either.

I'm sure I've been called a "metalhead" more than a few times back when I was in school.

All the time. I think it's human nature (or maybe just laziness); it takes time and effort to figure out what someone is really like, so it's easier to make assumptions based on how they look, what their job is, etc.

What's funny to me is different people will form different, sometimes totally opposite, stereotypes of me. If I meet someone at an art gallery and they find out I work 9-5 for a big corporation, they think I must be totally square, conventional, and uncreative. Meanwhile at work, when people find out I'm a musician, they think I'm flaky, bohemian, partying all night, etc.

But, whatever. I am who I am, and if people can't be bothered to find out the truth, eff 'em.

I get stereotyped as the "Jew" because I'm Jewish. Shocker eh?

It turned into my nick name with all my football buddies, and I learned to accept it, then my coach made a point to change my nickname because my coach is awesome, I then got renamed "Disco" much better. I think it is okay by friends to call me it because I know it is true fun, they don't have anything against me being jewish... but there are kids who will call me jew, and just have the worst tone and that's when I get insulted, and I will usually hit the kid.

this.

although, the football team couldn't get over my long hair, so the general populace thought I was a jock, and the football team called me "hippie". I was really neither of these.

Honestly, while going through high school I never observed the traditional, teen drama styled stereotypes that are played out in many movies. I also never really witnessed kids getting bullied either. I really believe that high school these days is much different than it was even 10 years ago. Whereas most older people seem to hate their high school years and only think of them with dread, I honestly can only look back on them with happiness and maybe even a small desire to relive a few moments.

That said, maybe that`s because I was hard to stereotype. I was in marching band and jazz band, played competitive soccer, skateboarded, played in garage bands, was an almost straight A student, drove a regular SUV, and was usually involved with a girl or two at any time. Maybe I just lucked out?

I (was) Stereotyped constantly during my first trip of school, by both the student body and the faculty/administrators. I have Cerebral Palsy and walk with forearm crutches. I not only ran across the typical teasing/trying to get me angry from students but a wide gamut of ignorance and foolishness from faculty and administrators (which was worse). The spectrum went from trying to discount my intelligence so that I could be sent to the "special" school, to as far as I was fantastic and wonderful because I had control over my bodily functions.

Pay absolutely no mind to what others think of you and carry yourself so that you're content with your life.

End of Story.

God Bless, Ray
