what is calculus used for again?

i still don't understand why such unholy amounts of math are required but only to receive a "piece of paper".

For determining the rate of change of slope and finding the area under the curve of course ... and damping ... and calculating amplitude/frequency of harmonics ... and ... and ... very useful.

Well, it's useful in calculating the frequency content of complex seismic waves so the building you're in is less likely to collapse and bash your brains into a throbbing gelatinous pulp. Other than that, it's not very useful.
