Or woman, for that matter?
The ice cream man in our neighborhood is coming back on nice evenings. Jolly young West African guy, drives a decrepit white Chevy van. He plays Christmas songs over the speaker along with the bells. Probably has no idea whatthey are, just that they sound happy.
Only thing I wish he wouldn't do is come at sunset; here you have finally got the kid calmed down from playing and she is finally halfway ready to go to bed...and the bells go off. ICE CREAM MAN!!!!!
Scramble around for change, beg Dad for two dollars. Run downstairs and out the door at top speed to the end of the court, along with most of the other kids on the block, some in pajamas. You want to say 'No', and you cannot, because after all it is a nice late spring evening. Besides, a Red White and Blue Bomb Pop would taste pretty good right about now.
If anyone asks me what I love most about America, it is this.

My mom bought a gut truck several years ago and hired a guy $5/hour cash to drive it and sell stuff. She allowed him like two or three sodas and candy bars per day. She typically cleard about $100 a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I've thought about doing the same thing.

I greqw up in a very quiet neighborhood in NYC (out in Queens it was quite suburban)....we'd hear the trucks bells from blocks away. Stirred us into a Pavlovian frenzy. Good to be a kid.

If I was an icecream man the dark side of me would like to have a tinkly bell arrangement playing of the last movement of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder..... just stupid dark humor.
