As A Young Guy, My Top Laments...

Sign in to disble this ad
1. Can't buy Jäger over the counter
2. Can't buy JD over the counter
3. 90% of other "young people". I am not like them, please don't assume I have no idea about a Parliamentary Plurality vs. a Majority...
4. The Way "Young People" are targeted by the media/businesses. I DO NOT WANT WHAT YOU THINK I WANT!
5. Can't drive. This is, however, understandable...
6. The lack of things to rebel against. I need some kind of police state/repressive dictator in my own back yard to stick it to...
7. Maths. I don't need to determine the equation of a parabolic graph in my life. No, really, it doesn't have a single iota of influence on my plans...
8. It seems harder to get going now than when my parents were young. Buying a car, getting a job, , getting a gig and just getting by as a young adult sounds like a breeze in 1980.
9. People don't seem to want to have fun anymore. People are way too guarded, can't just let things happen as they go along and enjoy themselves, especially when any kind of bloke/bird interaction is involved.
10. All my idols are from a distant age. Churchill, Lynott, Bobby Moore. There's noone from the current day and age who I cna rally behind. My generation, I am dissapoint.

Is it me,...or does it seem like 90% of young people claim to be not like their peers?

I can get next to number four,...but I'm not like 90% of other young adults in that I hate the media.

EDIT: Well mainstream media.

Nah, its part of the, "I'm an individual......total non-conformist" phase.

You may never need to determine the equation of a parabolic graph, however, the critical thinking skills you develop through the study of mathematics will be of great use to you through life. Benefits don't have to be direct.

The ultimate irony here is that, as a 30-something former non-conformist, it's much easier to look back and see how teenagers of every generation conform to the non-conformist mold.

Also, I promise you the skinny jeans and hoodies that are all the rage now will be an embarassment in 10 years.

Promise.

6,8,9 & 10 are interesting observations. The others are fairly common teen-isms.

A lot of study is required to be a true non-conformist.

This is the most true statement ever, but it pretty much applies to any fashion trend ever!

I'm just glad I'm not fashionable, I've got rugby players thighs! No way they'd fit into skinny jeans!

I'm like 90% of my peers. That other 90% claims they aren't like their peers, so I guess I fall into that catagory.

Ahhhh...

"Don't label me man!" - teenisms.

And of course the most annoying thing a grown up can say. "Been there." or wait wait.. heres another.."wait till you get in the real world kid."..that always chapped my hide.

Numbers 1 and 2 contradict 3, which proves warwick.hoi right. And the latter part of 3 doesn't sit well with 7, those who don't know the difference may well be better than you at math which brings you about zero steps forward in proving you are not a dumbass.

As a former young guy, my top lament is teenagers claiming they have laments.

Now

Edhunter, you were mildly credible until you denounced maths. Believe me, if you are planning to get any sort of career that requires a university degree (sans stuff like journalism and art), you are going to be using complex math.

I joined a non-conformist group once but I quit. They were all alike.

They're out there. They are just sneaky about it nowdays.

I believe most young people are disillusioned with their generation. I had a modern history teacher who was a teen in the late 60's, and he said he remembers thinking "Oh, my generation is so boring, nothing has happened".

Ok, I'll admit some of those point a touch of levity and a slight at the "we're young and have issues that are, like, sooooo bad", but most of those are worthy points.

And as far as hipsters go, my jeans are tight because Gillan declared it so and I eschew a hoody for my denim jacket and a Thin Lizzy shirt.
