You've gotta fight, for your right to free chicken?

Oprah’s Coupon Crazies Nearly Riot in Midtown

Oprah.com commenters sure got their feathers ruffled over her botched KFC giveaway, but it turns out spending hours trying to download the coupon was just the first chapter in the harrowing ordeal. During lunch today, freebie fiends invaded a midtown KFC and engaged in a deadly game of chicken with the management.

Earlier today, a tipster reported to Gothamist from the KFC on 42nd between Madison and Park:

Despite the very visible grilled chicken behind the register, the manager told everyone with coupons to leave and that the promotion was over for the day. The people there are currently holding a sit-in and refusing to leave until they get their free chicken ... or the cops are called. Racial epithets were being spewed, people who actually wanted to pay for chicken were facing a potential beatdown, and the manager ran from the screaming horde. Oprah, what have ye wrought?

Gawker has another troublesome report of people running around like chickens with their heads cut off: “A small RIOT started going on outside the store with people screaming at the manager.” And per a Midtown Lunch tipster, lunch came with a side of ugly at KFC’s 50th and Seventh Avenue location: “There was about 50 ppl crammed into a very tiny space before me ... will try again much earlier on another day. The mgr said ‘while supplies last’ so I wouldn’t even attempt this location.”

Oprah had better make up for this with another giveaway — and this time, make it Popeye’s.

Somehow I don't think the inventor of the protest form known as the "sit in" really had this in mind. Maybe, I'm missing something, but KFC chicken isn't that good.

Why does Oprah have anything to make up for? Was Oprah at that particular KFC, refusing to make good on the coupon?

This reminds me of the people who complained about having to pay the taxes on the free car she gave them

No good act shall go unpunished.

My god. I can't get over the people complaining "I have to feed my family/kids!!!" God forbid you go to a different fast food joint or, even worse, cook a damn meal.

well... they mentioned on the news that the price of groceries has inflated almost 21-25 percent since January... at least here, it has... I guess everyone will take a free/cheap meal where they can get it.

And to think, most of these people drove far enough to get this deal that they burnt the difference between the regular price and the sale price in gas.

Who cares if you had to burn $10 in gas to save $5 on chicken? It's a good deal!

Yeah, the UK KFC is not so good as they doesn't use all
the tasty hormones and brine pumping solutions like we
use on chicken here.

Actually in both the UK and the US the KFC is terrible. Australia's KFC is alright, but the quality of the chicken in the US and UK used at KFC is some of the worst I have seen. I think I had better KFC in Vietnam! That said, I still indulge from time to time, but I am not going to engage in any sit-ins!
