MILWAUKEE (AP) — MillerCoors LLC says goodbye to Zima.

The joint venture between SABMiller's U.S. unit and Molson Coors Brewing Co. told distributors in a letter Monday that production of the malt liquor beverage was discontinued as of Oct. 10.

Chief Marketing Officer Andy England says the decision was due to weakness in the "malternative" segment and declining consumer interest.

He says distributors can get remaining Zima inventories most likely through December.

Distributors are being asked to put products from caffeinated alcoholic beverage Sparks on retail store shelves to make up for Zima's absence.

The brand came to the joint venture from Molson Coors, maker of Coors Light and Keystone.

"Malternative"? God, I hate marketing-speak.

Zima was a bad idea to start with. Caffeinated alcoholic beverages are even worse.

EDIT: On second thought, caffeinated alcoholic beverages aren't that bad - like Jack and Coke, for example.

Many years ago, when Zima first came out, I invented a drink called the "marketing exec". Zima mixed with Pepsi Clear.

In college we found that adding a bit of triple sec to a Henry Weinhards made it taste exactly like Zima.

We were excited by our discovery until we realized that basically we had wasted beer AND alcohol.

Damn, that's funny...

My friends dad worked at a local distributor, He got us "TWO CASES" when they first came out. We were gonna have a party, Invited a bunch of people... Only a couple of folks showed.

Four College aged dudes + 2 cases of nasty Chick-Liquor= FAIL.

That was one painful weekend... NEVER DRANK ZIMA AGAIN! Even when it was for free... and free is my favorite flavor of alcohol.

Zima sounds like some sort of haemorroid cream.

My reply would be "That's what it tastes like, too." except that then I would have to explain how I knew what haemorrhoid cream tasted like. (Which I don't, thanks)

Somewhere, an underage fratboy is crying.

I've never tried Zima - because I've never wanted to try Zima. I have Wychwood Hobgoblin in the fridge right now. Mmm...

I tried a Zima once about 12 or 13 years ago. It sucked.

Zima was heartburn in a bottle. Let me get my Oakley Razors and take the T-Top out of my 85 Iroq Z and let the good times roll. I forgot about the tight jeans and Reebok high tops.

Zima was good for young, stoned, hungover musicians to drink on a sweltering hot beach.
