For cigars they're fine if you're not sucking the butane into the cigar or re-lighting it over and over. That's how the taste would be affected.
If you light properly, by heat away from the flame without sucking to light the cigar, then these are fine though not ideal in the purist/snob sense. I light lots of Cubans with my Zippo, no problem.
I have these, which my wife bought me. I'm very partial to 'Winter'.

That really hacked me off.

It just puts me off getting another one.

Before I left, my K-9 brothers gave me this lighter. "Nicky" on the front of the lighter was the name of my dog. The pic on the back isn't very good, but it's a map of 'Nam.

I'm down to one slimline brushed chrome version. I'd like to have more again but... am trying to quit smoking (successful since last valentine's day) and too much mental focus on Zippos could help me find my way to a pack of Lucky Strikes.
Okay... I've got to stop this and go find something heavy to smash on my smoking fingers... yeah... it helps. |

Fortunately they were all given to me, so I didn't lose any money on them. If they come out with re-issues of the Bettie Page ones, I might buy one but until then I don't see myself owning another.

The one that I remember most fondly I bought in NYC and it had a pic of the Manhattan skyline, complete with WTC. It got stolen. I replaced it last year with one with the same pic, only the WTC ain't there anymore.
I'll say no more just now.

I got it in 06 so having it for 4 years without loosing it speaks volumes.
I like them over disposables because you aren't throwing away/loosing lighters all the time. People think twice before pocketing a Zippo when you oblige their "gotta light". They work in the cold and wind better than a disposable. I love the sensuality of the Zippo,...the smell of naptha,...the oily patina from lighter fluid overfills and best of all the metal clicking of the hinge and the zing of the lid opening up.
When I was quitting I was going back and forth with not having a reason to use my Zippo anymore. My health won out. (It will be a year in April) |
