The Bad Plus

Any NYCers know these guys? Caught them the other day, Reid Anderson on bass, a fabulous gig I thought. Mixture of their own material (Reid composed a few), some "deconstructions" of pop/rock/electronica by Nirvana, Police, Aphex Twin, then they came back on with some horn players and played some tunes from Ornette Coleman's "Science Fiction". Best gig I've seen in months and I'm enjoying the album as well.

Someone knowledgeable just gave their disc a very strong recommendation; time for a trip to Amazon...

I read some good comments about the Bad Plus recording, too.

Someone compared their approach to Sweden-based Esbjörn Svensson Trio. You might want to check this also:

the latter has a couple of sample songs to download.

I'm a fan of EST as well - saw them twice last year and have three of their albums. Both bands are piano trios that mix jazz with some rock/pop elements - more so in the case of TBP than EST. I've heard some jazz purists dismiss these bands as "jazz for people who don't like jazz" but I'm a big jazz fan and still enjoy both bands.

They're profiled in JazzTimes this month.
