Reminds me of a video my friend had called 'Iron Shirt Qi Gong' - it took him ages to get why I thought that was funny.

Nope, that's an oboe, which looks a lot like a small English horn. French horns are the twirly brass jobs!

Paul, you and I may be the only ones on this board old enough to remember the song that makes this a cool comment.

. . . But I suspect the woman was referring to a novelty song that was kinda popular for a while way back when. All I could remember for sure about it was the refrain:

"I took my horn to a party,
but nobody asked me to play."

I didn't remember for a certainty where I'd heard it, but I first guessed it was sung on TV by Buddy Hayes who played bass and tuba for Lawrence Welk from 1954 to 1966. He did occasional novelty numbers like that. Hayes and my dad (trumpet) played together in an Army band at Camp Callan, La Jolla, during WWII. (We watched a lot of Welk at our house when I was a kid.)

BUT, then I actually found the thing on youtube. Turns out it was sung on the Welk show, not by Hayes but by trumpeter Rocky Rockwell. I remember his face now after seeing it.

I need to get a life, don't I.

Hey, Paul-cut Larry some slack-he demonstrated to several generations of aspiring jazz musicians how it shouldn't sound. Pat Boone provided the same service for another musical genre as well.

Tell me about it. Still have contractors asking me to wear white pants and shoes.

No, I don't.

Actually, I thought I was pretty safe bringing up L.W. on "Off-Topic" since the heading up there says it's for stuff that is "totally non-music-related." However, it's not a problem. He was no hero of mine. Fixed it already.

Bookend

I play OT - bluegrass, and don't own a bow. A couple years ago my wife bought me a bookend for my birthday, a metal wire-frame figure of a classic cello player sitting with the instrument between his knees, with a bow.

It is on the shelf. I never told her different. Would you?

Well, I think the sooner you tell her and both have a laugh about it, the better. "The instrument between his knees"..........

Indicative of a man of experience. Well done, indeed.
