brianrost - I guess VCRs/cassette players can be sold in the UK because they do have legitimate uses in terms of prerecorded media.
Steve Killingsworth (and others) - Apologies if you feel I have dragged this thread away from the original topic. As I alluded to in some of my earlier posts, music industry hysteria about lost revenue from new technology is not a new phenomenon, so one point I was originally trying to make was that I had no reason to suspect they were losing any money this time around. The article in question therefore confirmed my supposition, so thanks for posting it.

Don't worry about shifting the focus of the topic. You will learn that our little herd tends to graze all over the pasture.

Thanks, as I'm new here I'm still wary of breaking unwritten rules - but everyone seems very welcoming.
By way of illustration of my point, the image linked to below was scanned from a mid 70's record sleeve - and the music industry seems to still be alive and well

This article just basically solidifies my belief that filesharing is a good thing. Through filesharing, I've been exposed to jazz -- and as such, I now have a large CD wallet FULL of legitimately bought jazz CDs, more than one live DVD, and I've chosen my profession to be a jazz musician.

Through filesharing, I was exposed to Primus -- since then, I bought Frizzle Fry and paid full price for tickets to see them in Toronto in the summer.

Through file sharing, I was able to get a hold of some Victor Wooten solo stuff. At the time, I'd been playing for a month and didn't know of a single bassist to look up to. He provided me with a vision of what can be done with a bass, and I kept playing and improving. Right now, I'm the best slab bassist in my school and I'm learning upright.

So, in my best impression of an after-school special, I'm going to say...

"Thank you, filesharing!"
