If you were to try that out here for a couple of blocks (without a car seat), CPS would take your kid and throw you in prison for a mandatory 30-life followed by outpatient "re-education" camp. But for some reason, they can climb around on the bus unrestrained. It all makes perfect sense, I'm told.
What about NY?

Drivers of yellow medallion taxicabs and for-hire vehicles and their passengers, are exempt from laws regarding car seats and seatbelts. Keep in mind, the TLC encourages everyone in the vehicle to buckle their seatbelts while riding in a cab. There are no Taxi and Limousine Commission rules regarding this, as it is a State exemption. Passengers with children are encouraged to bring their own car seats, which the drivers must allow passengers to install.
*NOTE - Children under the age of seven are permitted to sit on an adult's lap.

But taxis around here are pretty much used for traveling to and from the airport, and drunks. No daily cab rides.

One of the best 12 hours/day at $3/hr-after-expenses jobs you can have. Not to mention the total lack of exercise, endless coffee to stay awake and dealing with drunk college students or with the underbelly of society.... Well, maybe that's only in London, Ontario.
Although come to think of it, I always had cash in my pocket back then...........Hmmm............Na.
Anyway, the safest spot in a car is in the middle spot of the back seat. There is a hip belt there and the parents sit on either side. This makes the child feel secure mentally and physically. This belt is rarely used so it can sometimes stick. Make sure it is snug, low across the hips.
If the middle belt is too stuck or it has been tucked under the seat, the second safest spot is directly behind the driver (although 8 times more fatal than the middle!). This usually has a shoulder belt. Have the child do a "touchdown" with his/her arms and have the shoulder part of the belt go under the left armpit. Otherwise it goes directly across the child's face.
NEVER put the child in your lap and then put the belt over the child. The driver just has to tap the brakes and your weight crushes down on the infant and could cause serious damage.
Also, putting an infant on your lap after you already have your belt on might make you feel you are being loving and protective. But accidents usually happen before you know it and you won't have time to brace for impact. Oops, there goes baby out the window! |

| | | | Unless it's a very short trip, we stick the car seat on the stroller. We have an Inglesina; the car seat fits on top after we lean the seat back. A lot of our friends have the strollers that are designed for use only with car seats (the kind where the seat clips on). | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
