I get the pleasure of a multi-week indefinite playing vacation due to a most unfortunate run-in with an edger. 19 stitches in my left first and fourth fingers later, I'm in a splint for a week and hoping my fourth finger somehow grows back together normally somehow.
I'm an idiot.

Heal well, Danny. | Indeed, Marcus. I imagine that if that blade had hit a bit higher I might not have part of the pinky. Miraculously, there were no bone breaks, just deep cuts. Also miraculous was the apparent lack of obvious tendon damage. Once the stitches are out and the swelling is down I will be beating down the door of the friendly neighborhood hand specialist.

I DID go a bit further with a table saw a long time ago, to the point of "partial amputation". Same finger, right hand. Two surgerys and a small steel rod later, the pinky is still there, albeit in vestige mode.
This was in 1978 and most people thought I was nuts to try and save it, including most doctors I consulted. Overall, I'm glad I elected to have the operations.
It hasn't hurt my playing stringed instruments, so if the injury had to happen to ANY digit, the right hand pinky was least important. Unless you play lefty!
Stay with it, you'll be fine soon enough. |

BTW your playing is pretty freaking nice, Paul. I'm flattered to be admonished by ya. I wish my trip to Denver this Tuesday were longer than a day trip; I'd love to come catch you out somewhere. Next time... |

myself I usually have cuts or burns somewhere (I am an auto mechanic) right now I have burn on the pad of my first finger on my left hand, and naturally I have my first Upright Bass lesson tonight (I just switched from electric wooot!)I know that is gonna smart a little.  |

Aside from some presently annoying scabs and what will surely amount to an impressive scar I feel 95%. I don't say 100% because the skin is still a little tight, so I don't yet feel comfortable with stretching my pinky back the way I used to. I bet that after the scabs are gone I'll be fine; my first finger was in somewhat similar shape and now feels fine.
I played this past Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and felt really good. The guys were happy to have me back and I was more than a little happy to be back in the saddle. 
One perversely nice thing about all of this came during a gig that I attended as a spectator. It was the CD release party at my favorite place to play in Dallas (Gypsy Tea Room). The room was packed, the band was smokin', and the folks were digging it. Despite having Drew Phelps - easily one of the very best players in town and someone whom I consider way, way beyond my present point - covering for me, I couldn't help but think, "I can do that better; they sound better with me." Sure, in practically every other scenario Drew will run circles around me. Still, in that scenario, it was very nice to feel like that was my place and see that my sound is a big part of that group.
