He is taking Daxun's (sp) teaching position at Northwestern University.

Yeah,

DaXun left Northwestern to teach at University of Texas in Austin, and rather quickly, Peter Lloyd took his post as full time Professor of Double Bass. I'm not exactly sure what's happening up in Minnesota because of it.

I think Peter is just there (at Northwestern) temporarily until they are able to conduct a full search.

I haven't heard that there has been an audition announced yet for the principal job, althought I did hear that it may be sometime next spring.

Yes, the principal job is open now. I hear there will be auditions for it late this season.

I think there's more to the departure from min than meets the eye.

From what I heard, Texas simply offered Daxun a better deal than he was getting at Northwestern (which included a collaborative piano faculty position for his wife/accompanist, something NWU was unwilling to offer). I'm not sure anything "happened" to the guy there; I think Daxun is kind of a special case, and he easily fits into a department with another bass professor (who would, for example, focus on the orchestra side of things while Daxun worked on solo and chamber literature). But maybe a UT student can chime in on this.

Yes there is BUT it is not something that can be discussed here in public. I have some knowledge of what happened but I hadn't heard the final word on it. I will not comment here about what I heard since there was obviously some kind of dispute. I respectfully decline to divulge any hearsay or knowledge of the situation. Just that there is or was one!

Ha! No one yet. I'm pretty sure Peter had intended to stop playing full time at some point and focus on teaching. I don't know if his leaving the orchestra is 100% due to this "dispute".

what made him do it? do you think there was a buildup of hostility? can he plead disability (drinking or something like that)?

He was principal for over 20 years.

What happened was certainly tragic for Peter. Unfair? Depends on who you ask, I'm sure. Conspiracy? I really doubt it.
