I've heard this from two reliable people:
A bassist from Brooklyn - name withheld - was going on tour. Had his bass secured in one of those kevlar hard shell bass trunks. He left it at the curb, dashed back inside to get his bags. He came out to see the trunk being crushed in the back of a NYC garbage truck.
