Some great personal news for Jazzbo

Hey all,

I haven't been at TB lately as it has been a busy couple of years. But, I wanted to share with everybody some great news, the result of a lot of hard work and sacrifices, (especially when it comes to music).

I applied to and was accepted into 2 different doctoral programs in clinical psychology here in the SF Bay Area. So, starting in September, (after the lady and I get back from our celebratory trip to Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos), I begin my study toward my doctorate.

As a first generation Hispanic man in the country I'm particularly proud of this. In my entire lineage, both sides of my family, there are a total of 4 Bachelor's Degrees, (my sister and I, and two cousins). There is one Masters, (my sister), and I will be the only PhD.

I'm extremely excited about the challenges, experiences, opportunities, and training that I'm endeavoring upon. There are certainly going to be some difficult times, but I'm really passionate about this field, and this is definitely the actualization of a lifelong dream.

For any other oenophiles in the crowd, for my own personal congratulations I purchased a bottle of 1933 Broadbent Malmsey Madeira. It will sit on my shelf as inspiration, and upon commencement of the PhD, will be opened!

Congrats Jazzbo! I have a master's in clinical psychology, and for those who don't know, it is VERY difficult to get into a doctoral program in clinical psych. Most programs typically only take a small handful of students a year. What's your area of interest?

Thank you Jim. It's great to know someone in the field.

I am psychodynamically-oriented. I'm considering looking at how the higher defense mechanisms like sublimation and humor manifest cross-culturally for my dissertation, although at this point there are several areas of research that are interesting to me.

Career wise, my goal is private practice supplemented with teaching and writing. It will be important to me, however, to use my training globally for humanitarian causes, perhaps looking at PTSD and other anxiety disorders, or dissociative disorders as applicable, in war-torn areas like Cambodia and Sudan. Areas that don't get the publicity that the Middle East gets.

At the very opposite end of the spectrum, I'm an applied behavior analyst. My training was actually in behavior therapy, which I did for a few years at a community clinic, but for the past nine years I've been working with adults with developmental disabilities at a state residential facility. I actually started school as a music major, but bailed out for the big bux in psychology.

We do seem to have a lot of psychologists here... I wonder if we should infer something from that! I'm ABD in cognitive/physiological.

Thank you everybody for the well wishes and congratulations. It's nice to see a fraternity of psych students/psychologists/therapists. We will have to start our own group and then take over the world.
