Titanic's violin

With the 101st anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic coming up, here is an interesting article from CBC about the violin of the bandmaster being rediscovered and confirmed.

This is the article.

This page has a 19 minute audio podcast on the Hartley's violin and the music of the Titanic and its times.

I wonder if the bassist survived by floating on top of it?

The bassist's name was John Clarke. He died, along with the rest of the band.

the second article says it was found in a womans attic...

how'd it get there?

otherwise- is that really what a violin looks like after a hundred years at the bottom of the ocean? i would've thought the wood was complete mush by now....

is it getting restored to playable condition?

that would be wild...

^ It wasn't at the bottom of the ocean for 100 years.

Some reports at the time suggested Hartley's corpse was found fully dressed with his instrument strapped to his body, though there was also speculation the violin floated off and was lost at sea.

Henry Aldridge and Son said it researched the violin's story with a Hartley biographer as the instrument underwent forensic testing, uncovering documents that showed Hartley was found with a large leather valise strapped to him and the violin inside.
