What to bring to college!?

Hello all,

I am going off to college in a month or so and I was wondering if you guys (and girls) could help me out on getting a list of things I should bring with me.

My Major is Double Bass performance, and my minor is Music Education.

I am also looking for a decent computer (my CPU at home is crap), and a good program that will help me out in my music theory classes.

I know this may be a little stupid. But, could you guys recomend some things I will probably need to take with me?

Thanks

Your bass, clothes, a cpu, a microwave, mini-fridge, and a TI-83+. Anything else you can put on your bursar or your mom will buy at the Wal-Mart when she comes up to visit you.

As a side note, a bong is a very handy "friend making" device. Mcnaire is obviously ready for college.

Hey Mc... you might want to just hold off on any purchases until you get going at school, because it's hard to know what you'll need to buy and what might already be available to you on campus. Money is usually tight all through college, so maybe you should wait and see what you really need when you get there.

The bass/music department most likely has a list of basic supplies you need to get started. Anything you need in that vein should be available to you locally, so why not get it there instead of transporting stuff from home?

Sorry I can't help you with the computer thing, someone else can help you with that... I'm an old school guy who still uses a piano and manuscript paper. I think I'm faster that way at this point.

Good luck.

PS... that last bit about computers is not by choice, BTW.... if I'd had the programs that are available now when I was in college, I'd have surely used them.

Thanks, I'll do just that.

One other thing... maybe the best thing to bring to college is a clear mind. The mention of bongs reminded me that I hindered myself immeasurably by diminishing my capabilities through alcohol and drug use in my early years and beyond. I can't speak for everyone, but I feel that these substances served more to close my mind and ears than the opposite.

There will be a lot of great information and inspiration being thrown at you in pretty intensive manner, and I feel that's it's best to keep your body and the brain and soul that's installed in it as clean as clear as is possible. Lord knows I tried to do it the other way, and I don't recommend that.

Sure is.

Bong's also good for playing games with your memory, motivation, AND REAL good for getting you tossed out of school and maybe given chrome braclets...

Sorry. Although I believe in "having a good time" and played once or more per week in a New Orleans band(read Burbon Street gigs at times), the non-engineering classes I HAD TO take let me see many folks who spent their COLLEGE TIME on useless diversions and brain-wreckers. They got mad and whined a lot when the Prof's wouldn't "curve" the tests more. The called us nerds and geeks. We called their major "Arts & Parties". Engineering school required a sharp mind to remember everything and learn so much so fast. Anything that prevented that got removed from one's life.

If you take full advantage of college(soak all the useful knowledge up like a sponge), enjoy the time and place(most can't go back), and throw yourself into it like you do live perfromance.....it will be a great experience and benefit to your life and a memory(memories actually) you'll treasure forever.
<stepping off of soapbox>

The other advice(laptop, minimal stuff you can get at dollar stores/walmart when you get there, etc.) is good. We've seen two through college already and shopped at dollar stores, salvation army, goodwill, walmart in ...Baton Rouge(LSU) and Daytona(Embry-Riddle) upon first arrival and semester beginnings.

Also, NEVER listen to ANYONE who tells you that you study too much. Consider dumping them if they are a "friend" or acquaintance. THEY will not support you for the rest of your life....YOU will.

I didn't either...

C'mon man, lighten up. Half the fun of college is learning what you need and what you don't need. You might be surprised when all the things you thought you needed get discarded within the first few months, including drugs and/or alcohol. Be serious about your studies, this may be the only time in your life you will get to devote so much time and experimentation to them.

Before you buy a computer, see what your school recommends and supports. You may also get a student discount on your computer and software.

A MacBook Pro laptop would be my recommendation if they support it.

Well, the dorms are split up, half of them are wireless broadband, the other half are wired. They ask that you download a program so you don't get "viruses". Which I think is a plow to either monitor what we are looking that, or to block sites. But I wont mind to much.

If you get a mac you probably won't need to worry about viruses.

Here's something you should not bring, and stay away from like the plague:

Video Games

I've seen more classmates fall to this vice than any drug that pervaded the dorms. It's really sad to see someone put more time into playing Guitar Hero than they do practicing their instrument.

Zzzingg.... good one..

One thing that might be cool to put on your Christmas list would be a recorder of some kind, like the Edirol that's been discussed here quite a bit. I'd think it would be very handy at college, for recording any audio info that comes your way, and for recording your own progress as well. Nothing like a good look into that Deep Dark Truthful Mirror to tell you what needs more work...

+1 Kam. As a recent grad., I have seen the same exact situation. Halo has diverted the minds of many freshman. Start a band instead, you will get more attention from the opposite sex that way.

And if he gets a mac, garage band is included. $100 later, and you have a very basic "studio."
