What I think is cool about this picture is that my bass is glowing it's mostly natural orange. Plus I love pictures of me the most that make it hard to tell what I actually look like.

I wish I could have played a bass duet with him, but it didn't work out. You know, it's funny: his signature sound and style of playing is almost diametrically opposed to mine, but I respect it as his voice and learned a few things that I can "borrow" even with three times as much tension on the strings and probably 3-4mm of extra string height. I hope I can be as good a person as he was to those hosting me should I ever get to do a "visiting artist" gig at some point in the future. | Eddie plays beautifully with that setup. He plays the snot out of the bow, sounding amazing on a plywood bass with a borrowed student bow with no rosin on the concert. Some of the things he was doing would be hard to do with a different setup, but he makes it work for him perfectly. If anybody else doesn't like his setup of sound, that's cool. I'm going to keep my own preferences, but I like what he was doing with his sound a lot, too. Win-win. |

It's good for students to know that Eddie (and others) do set their instrument up with the super low action. |

He loved the Shen, though, and went on a big rant about how lower range instruments are getting so much better these days. | Chris, what is the string height on this particular instrument?

I put it down as low as the adjusters would take it, tuned it back up, and that was it. "Pretty low but I've still seen lower" is about as close as I could guess. |

I got a call asking if he could use it for a performance at Notre Dame, where I was a grad student. At the time I was playing a battered Kay that had probably never been touched by professional hands -- luthier or player -- and frankly I thought it would be an embarrassment. So I told the organizer: "Sure, I will bring it, on the condition that you have to keep looking for a better instrument." Sure enough, they did. |

To give you something to chuckle:
The bass did its journey sleeping on the bed inside while I my wife and the kids had to sit cramped in the car.
Anyway my son (3yo) did revenge on the bass. While we've been working to erect the awning he take seat on top of the bass that laid on its back - sitting right on the bridge smiling at me when I entered the caravan to put the bass away.
I think my wife had to do quite some revitalization on me....
According to my daughter he climbed up on the scroll along over the fingerboard to reach his throne right on the bridge.
Fortunately its a ply and took the rough handling with grace... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
