where to study music in los angeles?

hi, i'm looking for some info for a friend, he is an accomplished classical flute player and he wants to continue his studies in the city of los angeles because he has family there.
so if you know some superior-medium level conservatory please write it here, and better if it has a website.

thanks
ELD.

I think Colburn is in LA. It's a free school, but hard to get into.

Colburn School: http://www.colburnschool.edu/about.htm
UCLA: http://www.music.ucla.edu/
USC: http://www.usc.edu/music/
Cal Arts: http://www.calarts.edu/schools/music/index.html

I don't have a degree from any of these places, but my impressions from hanging around various scenes are that Colburn is the most conservatory-like, Cal Arts is the most avant-garde, and USC and UCLA are excellent all-around schools, with 'SC maybe having the edge as far as preparing for symphony or studio work and UCLA for world music, criticism, etc.

The thing that I have found to be most beneficial from studying with Chris (UCLA) is his insight on orchestral excerpts. Not to say his Solo insight is bad, it is almost equally amazing. It should prepare you equally as well as the other schools. I don't go to UCLA though.
