$30 GC find

Sign in to disble this ad
I stopped in at my local GC to buy some strings last night and found myself under attack by the usual guitar shredder wanna be's. However, as I'm standing at the accesory counter this fellow leans over to me from the pedal display and asks me what I think about the distortion he's checking out. I was actually fairly impressed and told him so. It turns out that he was actually a GC employee that was checking out a new MXR Classic Distortion pedal. He then says that they'll be pushing it as a Black Friday special for $30. He then told me that if I'd like one he'd give it to me at that price now. Not knowing what it would sound like through my rig or on bass for that matter I thought for $30 bucks what the heck. If nothing else it would be a great Christmas gift for one of the many guitar players I know.

Let me preface my thoughts by saying that I'm not a big distortion kind of guy. With that said, I was really happy with this pedal on my practice rig at home and my gig rig later that night. I was able to dial in everything from a subtle dirt to some metal tones. However, there was some loss of the low end but nothing that would make it non-usable.

I'll let someone who knows more about distortion and overdrive pedal do a write up if they feel it's worthy. I just wanted to give you all a heads up on this deal as for $30 it's hard to go wrong. With a solid metal housing and bypass switching (I think) it would easily be a good mod project if nothing else.

Let me know if any of you have run across this thing. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

No matter what I have never had a problem with the quality of MXR pedals. Always like that line no matter what kind of pedal it is.

I'm not sure but I think I may be among the first to own one of these as they aren't even being advertised yet. The guy actually sold it to me out of the shipping pack they were pulling them out of to put them behind the counter. I guess that's kind of neat. I can't find any info on them on the web, even on the Dunlop site. It doesn't matter I guess as I seem to like it for the moment.

I received a flyer in the mail yesterday advertising that for $30. There were also coupons in there too. I may have to grab one of these little gems. I'm digging the pinstriping

What model number is it? I don't see it anywhere online or even the MXR site. I think it may be a "GC Exclusive."

There's a $29.99 sale this weeked at GC on various stuff.

I think the list was $129, but I could be way off there.

It's just something Dunlop made for GC. I checked.

I went over and took a look. They had none, naturally, nor did they have any of the BBE "Green Screamer" pedals they were supposed to have this weekend for $29.99 -- two hours into a nationally-advertised three day sale...actually, they never had any since last week.

Typical GC story.

The pedal is actually a re-boxed version of the MXR Distortion III. It is apparently pretty popular with GC customers, so they made a version for them. It's a steal at that price because the normal Distortion III is something like 60 or 70 bucks. I would have gotten one, but I have an original. Don't need another.

I don't have my Rick at the job right now...but the Distortion III and the PL are totally different catergories. So I can't really compare them...

I picked up one for the hell of it. I was surprised. It's sounds really good. Of course that's a subjective opinion, what I like you may hate. It has a good full distortion without sounding buzzy and you can get some nice low gain tones as well. Now I have to try the Distortion III.

Any way to get that price mail order, or do you have to be in a store on a Black Friday? [we don't have a GC in this region]

But there had to be quality concessions to meet the $30 price tag.
