Remember that Maxon made all of Ibanez's pedals up until the 1990's; so an older Maxon CP9 is exactly the same thing as an Ibanez CP9. The newer Maxon CP9Pro+ is an entirely different circuit though, so it's not like an old Ibanez CP9 will give you the same kind of results as the CP9Pro+.

The older CP9's lose some low end and are a bit noisy. They can be modded for better low end, if you want to do some soldering.

Bongo to the rescue again! I'm all good with a bit of modding, I've seen a few of the maxon ones in the pedalboard threads might give it a go

In that case, swap the input cap for one of 10x the current value, and look for C12--it should be a 1 nF from the factory, and you'll want to swap in a 470 pF. If there's no C12 marked, or if it's not a 1 nF, then I'll have to go back though my old notes to remember what exact part of the circuit that was.

does that mod prevent it from being a squash machine? i had one i bought for like $25 and sold it for $50. i was quite happy with that exchange. nothing i hate more than squashy compressors. sometimes they sound cool on guitar but i hate them on bass.

Nah, it just allows more bass through. It doesn't reduce either the squash or the noise.
