Is 23V too much for a 18V pedal ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello Gentlemen,

I've recently put my hands on a MXR BlowTorch. Since it currently is the only pedal I'm using, I don't have a need for a full (and expensive) power solution. I found an old wall transfo at home rated at 18V/300mA so I changed the plug on it, thought I would use it for my blowtorch.

Well, it seems like it's not a regulated PSU (probably just transfo, diode bridge and cap), so since the pedal only draws a couple mA, the PSU stays around 22-23V even under load (it's a 18V pedal). I do have decent electronic knowledge, but since I have no idea what is in this pedal, I'm asking you guys if you have any idea whether I am overpowering it and risk problems in the long run ?!?

Thanks,

I'm no expert, but I think it's not the best move.. I plugged a 12v adapter into a Boss 9v pedal, and it was distortion galore, and not the good kind.

Hmm, well first I bought it used, and for the price I paid I won't care even if there was supposed to be a PSU. But even then, he gave me the original box and I can't see where it could have fitted in it, and the manual seems to imply it wasn't included by suggesting what Dunlop model should be bought to go with it ...

Anyways, I think I will try to find another transfo to power it and will go with batteries until then. Thanks guys.

Yes it is. Especially for the Blowtorch.

23v is too much, please go to the nearest electronic-store (is that what they are called?) they can hook you up with a 18v easily.

everything else might ruin your pedal, don't take any risks here

Stop using that power supply, you will cook your pedal. Here's a helpful tip-always use the proper voltage. The amperage can be higher, as the pedal will only draw what it needs, but never use one with lower amperage, as this too will do damage to both the unit and the power supply.
