I know that exact feeling! I met Marcus Miller a couple weeks ago and it was the same thing. It's easy to get overwhelmed and tongue tied when you finally get to meet a legendary player of that caliber, who we as bass players look up to, study and (dare I say) idolize for years.

But when I ran into Sally Ellyson (singer for the cool band Hem), I lost it and started blathering on about nonsense! Coulda used my Groove Regulator then, I guess...

The funky box beat out:
Q-Tron (18V, XO and Plus)
DOD FX25 and 25B
Q:Balls
Xerogragh both regular and deluxe
Moog LPF
Boss AW-3
And a few others I can't think about at 0401

I've played/owned 19 filters now over the last two or three years, and my GRs are tied at the top with the Pigtronix EP2. I know that's a bit of a different beast though, and not really a completely fair comparison. The Proton is hot, but there's just something about the vibe from the Groove Regulators that gets to me!
Hey Spencer, any word on that EQ/DI or Overdrive? *hint hint *sigh... one of these days I still need to sit down and record the differences with the internal switch on the Fromel Proton........ lol

5sg. | I'm prototyping up a new revision of the DI next week. It's sounding killer, I just have to work out some kinks in the headphone section.
By the way, Chad at Bass EFX is now carrying my stuff. He's a great guy (and a fabulous bass player), and I encourage you guys to check out his site. |

He etches them from a screen printed design, so I could make you one that's a black screen print on bare metal, but it's going to be a while for that because I don't have any blank boxes in stock. |

They look nice and are easy to read. And they match my sansamp bass driver

I'll share my favorite settings. QUACK
The all-to-familiar mutron quack. Minor variations of this setting are seen often on many PYPB photos with a groove regulator.
Sweep: up
Range: up
Sense: high, above 3 o'clock
Attack: between 9-11 o'clock
Decay: between 1-3 o'clock
Intens: 2 o'clock or above
picture of setting: VOCAL FUZZ
Using a fuzz before the GR (not in the loop), start with the previous setting then flip-
Sweep: down
Intens: noon, roll the knob back to dial in the fuzz vocal tone. BOOWw
sound effect of the floor dropping out beneath your feet. Or the howling of a 100 pound attack dog held back by a flimsy gate, and the following sinking feeling in your heart as you walk by hoping said gate doesn't break open.
Sweep: up
Range: down
Sense: below noon
Attack: a hair below where decay is set
Decay: 9 o'clock
Intens: very low, 9o'clock to full off.

Awesome job, Spencer!

| | ...in search of the impeccable groove... | | Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Auckland, New Zealand | | | And then there were two... Colour me happy - just added a PWNZOR compressor (#17) to my board. Replaced an EBS multicomp which I've been using in various incarnations for the last 15 years (since the old grey boxes with the input on the left and output on the right).
Couldn't be happier - I was considering either an MXR Bass Comp or Aguilar TLC but really wanted a blend of the two - the functionality of the TLC (incl. lower ratio adjustment) with the aesthetics of the MXR (particularly the LED for visual adjustment). Chatted to Chad at BassEFX.com and he suggested the pwnzor (great guy to deal with by the way). I'd assumed that the first run had all been sold so hadn't really considered it, but jumped at it as I love the proton.
Great unit, very adjustable (tweaked the internal trimpot for my active Laklands), love the LED, adds a nice punch and smoothness to my tone (I like subtle compression) - another superb design and build by Spencer. |
