5k or 10k pot mod for Bassballs??

Sign in to disble this ad
I've heard of two ways to do this mod; in one, the trimpots are replaced with 5k pots, and in the other, the 4,7k resistors in series with the trimpots are removed as well as the trimpots, and are replaced by the 10k pots. Any idea which one of these mods works better? And what kind of difference in sound do these mods make?

Thanks

I think you have that backwards. I believe that on the pedal there is a 4.7K resistor in series with a 5K trimpot. I just did a direct replacement of the 5k and it works really well.

I believe the other mod is to remove the 4.7k and the trimmer and replace both with a 10k pot. This is supposed to give the individual filters more range, but I don't have any direct experience with that.

EDIT::: Wow, reading is hard. Nevermind. I like mine with the 5k and sometimes it can be hard to find the sweet spot. With a wider range that might be even more difficult. I still have no direct experience with the 10k, though.

If you'll notice in my first post, I was asking for an opinion of which mod was better, not how to do it. A search is indeed how I found out about the mod though!

I did neither - from memory, I used a 2k2 resistor in series with a 10k pot for the low filter, and a 3k3 or 4k7 in series with a 10k pot for the high filter. These values left less dead travel in the pots than using straight 10k pots and nothing else.
