Is there a pedal or chain that will give you that melodic 808 kick sound?

octave+lpf+compression?

if im not mistaken a bass drop is a single wave going from 80-40 hz. so a big slide with some subby EQ will do it. octave down couldnt hurt.

but really.. id get a sequencer.

There is a pedal, but it is a bass drum pedal that strikes a trigger at the base of the pedal. It is then connected to a drum brain box, where the 808 is selected.

Well, yeah, you could do it with a midi trigger connected Ableton or a drum machine. I get that. It would be rather easy actually.

But I was more interested in shaping the tone from an actual bass if possible. Just for the fun of it really.

Gotcha! I wouldn't know how to achieve the attack, but the tone should be attainable.

I do it all the time using palm mute technique. No pedal or effects unit needed.

I was thinking palm mute might be the playing technique to get it done. But I think the right effect would round it out. I mean I'm sure you might have good technique and and all but going clean you just aren't going to get the sub bass tone and warmth.

Think Brass Monkey from the Beastie Boys, Run DMC etc...

The next time my band plays, I'll try to record us playing Cupid Shuffle. If you know what you're doing, it can sound pretty doggone close. Only thing missing is that initial percussive attack but I play it in conjunction with the drummer so it sounds pretty close. I also play a 5 string which gets me in the sonic ballfield. I'm not sure what effects pedal will add that attack. May have to do some programming.

It can be done the way you say, but you have to find a way of changing the pitch along the length of the note consistently. I bend my B string and slide into it from above. Sounds convincing but not thaaat close

The 808 kick is just a resonant filter driven into self-oscillation with an envelope feeding the cutoff frequency. So, if you have something like the Moog LPF you could manipulate the Cutoff with one hand while you push the filter into self-oscillation with the other hand (by turning up the Resonance over a certain point).
