9 volt adapters...

Sign in to disble this ad
Need some suggestions for better way to powering pedals..
I've normally relied on several single boss 9 volt adaptors (15 years old) for the few effects I might use. Today I added a Tri-logic preamp 11 (18 volt) to the chain.
Some situations the adapters seem to create noise? not sure why but when I use with just internal batteries it's OK.

I'd like to have a mess free zone and would like to hear some suggestions on power supply's, also suggestion why the boss adapter would hum..

Thanks!!

It's it's only a few units I can recommend a Diago powerstation - this should daisy chain all the 9v pedals off the one supply noise free. They also sell an 18v adapter so one output on the daisy chain will power an 18v pedal.

I went back and forth with EWS engineers (very helpful and friendly, by the way) when my BMS made horrible shrieking noises when daisy chained with other effects using a Godlyke Powerall (9v adapter). They tested several EWS effects using the Powerall, and came to the following conclusion:

Basically, they said EWS (and Xotic) pedals simply will not work properly with Powerall adapters.

The suggestion was to use a separate power supply, so I bought (and am now using) a Dunlop 18v wall wart adaptor. Seems to work fine and all noise is gone. And, as you already mentioned, hooking up a battery made the effect dead quite. Essentially, isolating the power is the key, but Powerall units are not the solution.

Maybe the Boss adapters have comparable circuits to Powerall's, and thus are creating similar problems?

Realizing this probably doesn't help you, I thought I'd just share my experience since it was similar to yours. It simply demonstrates that EWS pedals are picky with regard to power units. Do note, EWS recommends Dunlop power supplies for their units.

Good luck...

Would something like the One Spot work for just a few pedals.. including the 18v effect?

I honestly can't speak to that. And I don't know if the Visual Sound stuff works with EWS pedals problem free. I suggest getting one from a place that offers returns so you can test it with your equipment risk free.

Good luck!

A few days ago I received my new EWS Tri-Logic Bass Preamp II (yay), and as you say - it works like a charm when it's running on two 9V batteries, but when I plug it in to my Dunlop ECB004 18V adapter it creates a LOT of noise!!

Funny thing is that the ECB004 is recommended by EWS themselves (see here: E.W.S. Tri-Logic Bass Preamp 2). I had a suspicion that my adaptor was faulty, so I had it replaced but the replacement gave the same result...

@Vlad5 - You mentioned that you are using a Dunlop 18V adaptor, is it the same as mine? And if so - how come that I get noises and you don't?

Has anyone got a possible solution to my problem?

Hey G,
I'm using a JOYO box which has 2-18v adapters and have no issues. The Tri-Logic is setup first in my effects chain. Sounds like something else could be going on, cables, building circuits, room lights, etc.?

Good luck..

I've had my ECB04 adapter replaced by the reseller, with the same result. I have tried the adapter on three different locations and through three different amps (old Fender Twin at home, new Fender Bassman at the rehearsal space and new Ampeg SVT-VR on stage) and I experience noise on all three.

I have also been in touch with EWS in this matter and they have been kind enough to reply and thoroughly describe their experience with this issue:

Quote:
We have just found that Dunlop changed the spec. of ECB04. ... The new one is smaller and lighter and it is "Switching Type". The plug of the new one can be removed ... We have found the new one (Switching type) is much more noisy.

Mr. Toshio promised to keep me updated, so I guess that I'll just run the pedal on batteries until I hear from him again...

60Hz hum? Might be as simple as using a power strip that filters ground loop noise, like this: Ebtech - Audio Solutions

Interesting indeed, I have actually never seen or heard of those! Do you know if there is an equivalent for the European market around? (I live in Sweden...)

take inventory of all your pedals, power, voltage, mA.
then go here & find one that fits your needs
Power supplies
(i think a couple new ones have come out since this page was built but it features the major power supply players & should get you going.)
(i've got a Fuel Tank Jr, Supa Charger & a VooDoo PP+ & all three work great.)

Yeah I have a Big John (the version that has two 12v jacks though, can't remember the name..) which is powering all my pedals except my Whammy which is running on 1300mA and my Tri-Logic which is running on 18v.
I'm trying to save some cash by using an adapter and not replacing my power supply with one that includes 18V, because that would cost me at least 100 euros...
