Question AC adapter w/ 3 wires?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got an original Midiverb w/ no adapter. I bought one that should work, but it only has two wires and the unit wants three. If I hook up the two wires it does power up but won't effect the signal. I looked on ebay and found out the part # for the original adapter, PA-1816W 18V AC C.T. 16VA.

Does anyone know where I can get one of these or an equivalent? Or do you know what I should do w/ my 2 wire adapter to make it work?

The 18VAC C.T. means an 18 volt secondary with a center-tap. It's essentially 2 x 9V windings in series. Add to that the specific plug requirement & you will have a very tough time finding this in a off-the-shelf part. You're best off going after an original.

The only other way to do it would be to match the specs & build your own power supply. You could put one of these in an enclosure with a mains cable in & whatever you need coming out. Be warned though, wiring mains devices is very dangerous & should only be done by someone qualified to do so.

Thanks guys. I guess I was hoping for a cheap solution. This is an ancient original Midiverb, nothing special but I'd like to be able to use it instead of throw it out. I haven't contacted Alesis yet but I fear that if they even have a 25 yr. old adapter for me it will be expensive. Same thing w/ the Mouser part, $15 + shipping puts me in the range of buying the whole unit + adapter in the ebay auction I linked.

The 2 wire adapter I bought (for 99 cents at the thrift store) powers the unit but no effect is applied, it just passes the signal. Very frustrating. I'm not worried about the plug, if I can find a solution I'll just solder the wires directly to the unit.

how about this ?
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/sto...0001_121216_-1

The power supply you need is rated at 18V AC, not DC but you need 3 wires ? I see the 3 pins (vaguely) on the eBay pic. I hope the Jameco link helps. IME I've only seen 2 wires on the output side of an AC to AC supply
I just ordered a 14V AC supply from them but it's a 2.5mm connector.
Even though your Midi Verb is a legacy item now, have you tried calling Alesis ?

Thanks but that's what I already have and it doesn't work. I need the 3 wire center tap kind of adapter.
