Achieving punch with compressors

I've heard that compressors could be set to give you more punch. How do you do that? I've got an aguilar TLC compressor. Any suggestions?

The punch you mean is not the main feature of compressor but if you set it good you can goal some difference in the dynamic, anyway if you want to obtain more punch you need more an exciter or a boost than compressor.

i think maintaining good headroom in your signal chain helps too.

also i lighter touch when you hit the strings will help, which is sort of in the same vein.

Compressors compress dynamics. They take the extremes out so that your signal is less dynamic and therefore can be boosted overall (because there are no painful spikes). I'm not sure I would call that more punch, to my ears it would be more volume and less punch, but maybe it's best not to get lost in the words. In any event, it will even out the overall sound - volume-wise.
