Adding Fuzz and Distortion to my board

Sign in to disble this ad
I already have a sansamp bass driver at the end of my board for some always-on subtle overdrive, and an Ibanez Phat-Hed for all-out distortion or heavy OD. I like the sound of the Ibanez (especially paired with the Sansamp) but I'm on my second one, the first died on me. I want to step up to some more reliable gear for my dirty sounds, but I'm keeping the Samsamp, so don't try to talk me out of that (although I might concider a Paradriver).

I'm looking for a great fuzz pedal AND an all-out distortion. From what I've heard, I'm leaning toward the Assmaster for fuzz (also concidering the Tonebender) and the Tech21 XXL Bass for the heavy stuff. Retaining low end is a big factor for me- the Phat Hed does a nice job of that- without a blend knob!

There are great vids on Youtube for the 2 fuzzes I mentioned, but I'm basing my XXL descision on reviews and descriptions. So sound clips as well as advise is appreciated.

I will be playing through a Stingray5 (maple board) into a Dunlop 105q> new Whammy> (new fuzz/distortion)> Line6 DL4>Holy Grail verb> Empress Trem> Sansamp Bass Driver. I have a triple looper from Loop Master with master bypass & tuner out. Loop 1 is all the above mentioned effects except the SABDDI, loop 2 (always on) is the SABDDI, and loop 3 is the Boss Loop Station XL. Amplifed through an SVT-4 Pro and some mid 90's SWR cabs (Goliath III & Son of Bertha) .

Any direction with my future dirt pedals is greatly appreciated.

What kind of tone do you want for the fuzz and the distortion?

Fuzz- no low end loss, Tonebender, B:assmaster, live mars volta (I know he uses a vintage Sovtek).

Distortion- not subtle, thick, high-gain but not buzzy or fuzzish, similar to what the phat hed can do, no low end loss, I like the heavy distrotions found on the Sansamp G2 but I've heard that there is low-end loss. Does anyone have XXLBE clips? If not, does it seem to fit my discription??

The XXL Bass is pretty high gain and nutso, but not in a fuzz type of way. Keeps a lot of low end, but not the real deep stuff.

Decent pedal, but I ditched it and never missed it. Sounds like it could be what you are looking for though.

maybe some sort of marshall-in-a-box kind of distortion would suit your needs.

Clips for the XXLB are in the Wiki.

No clips around for this bad boy yet but it's on sale now. The only people I've seen that have them are over at the basschat.co.uk forum, they liked it so much they bought 2 each so that they could use them for different settings. Pretty cheap as well, definitely worth a look...

They're in stores and on ebay in the UK for around £55. I guess you guys'll have to wait for a bit, no idea when they're out in the US. Try Google product search or something, one might turn up.

What distortion AND fuzz on the same board surely not

I'd go with a Subdecay Flying Tomato due to your bass and then a Mojohand Mule or Catalinbread Hyperpak.

Also look into the MI Audio fuzz's but they have funny power requirements.
