AdrenaLinn III Users - How are you using it?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a Roger Linn AdrenaLinn I on Ebay and will soon be ordering the upgrade to turn it into an AdrenaLinn III.

I'm kind of intending to use a Rolls MIDIWizard controller and keep the AdrenaLinn on top of my rack and run it through the effects loop of my Alembic F-1X, but I was curious how other people were using it, if they were talking advantage of the MIDI capabilities or just using it as a pedal, and which effects they found the most useful.

Any other bass related tips and tricks are welcome!

This unit has always had mild interest to me because it looks like alot of fun. My only concern really is all the beat locking stuff. No one here has really given a decent answer as to its stand alone functionality.

One of the functions of the AdrenaLinn is the ability to route the effects signal to the left out and the drums to the right out. My drummer and I have been discussing the possibility of feeding him an in ear signal of the drums so that he can play in synch to my effects.

I think I've decided I'm going to put the AdrenaLinn on my pedalboard and run it through the effects loop of my Bassbone pedal and see how that works out. I can always add a MIDI controller later if I end up using more than a handful of effects.

Just a bump to see if there is any more input, this is high on my list right now.

He just put out a native plugin version which is only $100. It's the kind of thing where nothing really stands out per-se but all of the design decisions were make from a place of insight. The whole is actually greater than the sum of its parts, which I look at as high praise.

IMO, the AdrenaLinn III is a great multi-fx init.

I really like the envelope filter but also the other effects are very good.

Just realized that I've had my Adrenalinn for a year now and I've mainly just left it sitting on the shelf, only bringing it out occasionally to play with at home and use as a drum machine for writing.

It's probably not as bass friendly as the Boss VF-1 I've been using, but it does a lot of sequenced/time aligned effects that you really can't get out of any other pedal sized unit. There's a lot more programming/messing around involved to get workable sounds as opposed to most of the other multieffects out there.

I've just thrown it back on my pedalboard and am starting to experiment while the band has a couple of weeks of downtime. A couple of things I've noted:

It seems to work much better in the effects loop of my amp as opposed to going bass > Adrenalinn > amp.

You'll want to have a separate MIDI controller for live, since using the buttons on the pedal to switch patches is a real pain. I'm going to use a Tech 21 MIDI Mouse.

I'll post more observations as I discover them...

I've had the A1 for a few days and am awaiting the A3 update before I get too deep into programming but already I am seeing uses for it in the studio, still don't see using it live tho.

the box is a wonderful piece of gear. good for those peeps who wish that their trems and flange will go in time. the midi capability is a good starter for ppl who wish to venture into midi.

but i think that the box is not too user friendly.Programming the adrenalinn is a pain. I recommend using soundtower's editor to program the patches in your lappie before sysexing it over.

I got the V3 update installed and scrolled thru the sounds and even tweaked a few more to my liking. True the UI leaves a lot to be desired but oh my gosh the sounds! The gtr amp models are excellent but the bass amp models are not so hot (can tell Linn is truly a gtr player). The envelopes are super rich and very well done. The Star EFX of the unit are the Tremolo, Vibrato, Chorus, Phase, Auto Pans, Flanges & beat synched delays-- best thing this side of an Eventide or Lexicon.
I've been doing recording sessions for the past couple of weeks and the engineer tried to steal it from me, told him to get his own. The gtr player is planning to get one too after he heard some of the Tweety bass stuff i did on a track.
I don't see using this live on bass unless you run a stereo wet & dry setup but for recording it is quite fun and useful.

I agree - the Ad3 is a great unit.

I actually quite like the user interface. It is a little bit odd in the beginning but it makes a lot of sense when you start using it. No menus, not strange hidden options - everything is clearly visible.

The bass amp models are quite good as well. They need a little bit of tweaking but I like them. Having said that, I usually set the amp model to Off or PrE (clean mic preamp).

I actually used it live and it works pretty well. I assigned the fx on/off to the footswitch on the right and it did the trick quite well. One of my customers is using it in a world tour and he is very happy about it.

That's good to know, I really need to spend more time with it. Have you used the computer editor from Sound Tower?

Yes, I have.

It has a few problems but it can be useful for drums or step programming.

It is also useful for backups.

If I were prudent the AdrenaLinn III with a compressor, bass overdrive & EHX BassBalls could almost do about everything else I need. Still mainly using mine for guitar stuff, reamping and some effects for mixing.
