| | | | I like my Boss ME-50B multi-fx pedal. A great way to start exploring different types of effects, for which you can then look at dedicated pedals. Lotsa auto-wah type fx for good funky stuff, decent compression, expression pedal, presets.
Anyway, I think it's a good place to start. FWIW/YMMV... |

| | | | For funk the logic move would be to get an envelope filter or "auto wah". You can search here to find some suggestions (I'm more into dirt and not that up to date with modulation). When shopping for dirt pedals (overdrive, distortion and fuzz) you should always search the forums to check if it works for bass because a lot of dirt pedals take away some bass frequencies which is not nice. You could first do some research on different effects and find out what you want first. Just look up some vids on youtube on different effects to get an idea of what it can do.
PS. A good way to start is to buy a used multi effects pedal like DeluxeRed mentioned. |

If you decide not to go with a multi effects box...then try some behringer pedals, they are a very inexpensive way to get your board started and toy around with some effects. Then when you figure out what you want you can start upgrading. |

If you've never used effects, it's a great way to start. You'll get an idea for what effects you like and don't like, then you can explore single effects if you feel the need.
Beware though, it's a slippery slope... like many of us, there's a good chance you'll get addicted! lol

welcome to the club, and enjoy a relatively affordable addiction.
