I tend to use house rigs at most clubs,
Rented rigs at festivals..
.. I use different amps,rarely mine..
so I never bother using an anp's fx loop
my signal is way better when I bypass my pedals,
my pitch-black plus and custom tube OD are pretty transparent, bur there's still a tiny loss of punch with them both on..
I've found with all pedals, the Purity of tone and overall punchiness is diluted.
I use two older effects, a DOD Meatbox,
Which I love, and a Boss LMB-3 limiter, which is soon to be upgraded
My board is small,I use 3-5 pedals a gig.
I can't afford to call Bob Bradshaw, so I thought I'd investigate some smaller looping systems..
My main goal is to keep the tone pure, nothing fancy..just on/off for each fx, maybe 5 w my tuner.

| | | Barge concepts makes good ones, the simplest one is this: Barge Concepts VB-Jr
They make more complex ones too, with variable feedback from the output of the FX loop back into its input, but I think for bass the simplest one is probably fine, plus it takes up less real estate on your board. |

This kind of stuff..
Something thin, light,,
simple, efficient but inexpensive.

I was going to go with a 4 loop + tuner, but this one was on sale for the same price. Figured I'll probably add a pedal at some point, and the master bypass could come in handy.
I heard good things about Road Rage also, and priced pretty much the same - however, the one in the loop being on sale seemed worth it to me. Now I just have to wait a couple of months to get it. |

If the pedals are in the loop, and you bypass it, your tone is pure.
If you have the loop "in" and a pedal on, you're not using your "pure" tone anymore, so it's kind of a moot point - unless you're a radical purist and want "pure tone but just that one effect at precisely how I have it set".
So a single loop. Bypass it for pure tone. Turn on the particular pedals you want, and hit the loop pedal to "turn them on" for a song, then bypass it again (or change the pedals that are on).
At least, that's what I do, and it works for me.

The ones with true bypass add an extra 4" of cable to your input impedance. That's half of avian everything.
Many pedals these days are "true bypass" but you can make one or more bypass loops yourself. 1 box, a few switches and jacks. Gets more interesting if you want LED indication but it's easy enough.
The other thing you might try is a small clean boost in front of all your pedals that is always on. Apparently pedals suck less when they have more to chew on.
