I am tired of wimpy, whimsical envelope filters. I had a DOD FX25, which I could get a good fat response from when I dug in to my bass, but it killed the low end and was a bit hard to manage. I have an older model Qtron and I can only coax the funk out of it when I play ever so gingerly. When I dig in the mix is 80% bass, 10% filter, 10% me sobbing in frustration. Help me out here, do I need a blend knob or do I just need to do sone tweaking?

MXR Bass Envelope filter. After trying the Q-Tron+, Proton, BassIQ, and DOD it was my favorite because it's so aggressive.

Here's a quick clip of mine:

I tried a few(Ibanez SB-7, a couple of varieties of FX-25, Bassballs)but for me nothing compares to the Agent 00Funk Mk-II. VERY tweakable, low-end friendly, not super-pricey. Commonly found used in the TB classi's.

The MXR is worth try, if for no other reason than the fact that Tim Lefebvre uses one

Not its main use by most, but the Xerograph Deluxe can funk.

+100 If you crank the Q on this thing and mix the effect level higher than the dry, it is a very deep effect. Plus, it's reasonably priced, and you're getting the MXR build quality, which lives up to its reputation.

Only one that I've heard that's more aggressive is the envelope on the Gig-FX Subwah (in sub-wah mode), and frankly, you're going to have to tame that aggression with a limiter if you want to avoid blowing something up. Even the instructions that come with the pedal warn of "more bass response than some amps can handle." Which for me, made it unusable.

I love my SubWah!

What about Iron Ether Xerograph...the most aggressive out there, for sure.

I love my 3Leaf Groove Regulator! I just use the original one. They go for a really good price used in the classifieds quite often. I've tried so many, and for the funk I use that.

I really like my new Electro Harmonix Enigma: Q Balls a ton! It is extremely tweakable, like as much as a PC plugin, and has a switchable fuzz in addition. It's great, not that pricey, solidly built, and I was able to very easily mod mine to have an additional master volume pot on the side that only affects the effect out, leaving true bypass intact. You should check one out!

Thanks for the input. I've been looking into both the Proton and the MXR M82. I've heard that the M82 can be sterile sounding. Can any one speak to this?

When I played one (several times in music stores, it is on my TO BUY list, along with every other MXR bass innovations item) it was far from sterile.

I'm no filter expert, but i liked how it sounded just fine!

YES!! Sort of. Since selling it was my main goal and I had an offer from a cat out on the west coast, it made more sense to have (THE AWESOME) Waterpilot ship it to the new owner.

I like the sound of mhwaaahhhr. I will probably pounce on the next BEF to pop up in the classifieds.

Hopefully, this video of mine will help you decide if you like the tone and character of the MXR M82 or not.

Great video and great tone! The filter sounds great on that Claypool line. I'm pretty sure that you all have sold me on the BEF.
