Agressive low end, but not distorted?

i play in a bunch of different groups that require a lot of different tones. i've been able to get what i need out of my markbass setup everything except my metal tone. is there a pedal that can help get my lows and mids more aggressive sounding without a lot of thud or actual distortion?

thanks a lot

More head room(wattage) would be a start.

Big +1. If not more wattage, then more efficient cabs. Also, surprise surprise, try a compressor. They can sometimes "tighten" your sound, and when set up right will increase the average volume of your notes without increasing the peak levels.
