The AGS circuitry adds nice tube growl and aggressiveness.
In regular mode it is a crystal clear tone machine. The Mid boost and mid frequency controls really are a big improvement.
This thing beats a Sansamp by a longshot! 18 Volts of power provides headroom galore. This is probably the closest I'll come to an Agular Combo amp, but it's great. It makes my $279.00 Crate 1X12 SOUND LIKE AN $1800.00 SETUP!
IT WORKS GREAT GOING THRU A HOUSE SYSTEM TOO.

The former because perhaps it really does make his $279.00 Crate 1x12 sound like an $1800.00 setup, the latter because we all know if he was in a position to ditch the Crate for the $1800.00 setup, he would.

I have one, already posted in the show your pt junior thread, but here it comes without "many" efx, just a simple setup.
My experiences with it; posted in the TH experiences thread. |

I brought it to a festival gig that night, knowing I wouldn't have a chance to try it out at all beforehand. I figured it would be worth a shot, since we were the first band and it was likely to be a glorified rehearsal (that being said, my guitarist thought I was crazy). I played through the house Ashdown combo amp. I wasn't crazy about the amp, but I was happy it wasn't something worse (seems as though bassists get the shaft with a festival backline). The Tone Hammer definitely improved the sound. I felt as though it was beefier, more defined, authoritative. This isn't a comprehensive review, since I basically plugged it in and we started playing. But it helped and I'm glad I had it with me. Kind of like going into the forest and realizing you have a Swiss Army knife (even if I only used the corkscrew).
One minor complaint about the TH. I needed to add batteries on the fly and felt like the compartment was a little cumbersome. You basically attach the batteries and shove them into the box. With Aguilar's great reputation for everything being built so tight, and the TH feeling like a mini tank, it was kind of disappointing to find they couldn't figure out a way to house the batteries in a way that didn't leave them loose in the box. I'm sure I'll go AC when I get an adapter, so it's kind of a moot point. |

I am really interested in this little box because I could use it to drive my Crown MT-2400. I had a DB924 but it was boost only and had no midrange control. This box would probably sound just as good and be way more flexible. And for $189 it seems like a great deal. |

Other than acting as a D.I. and AGS of course.
So I went a different way... |

I use my Tone Hammer to power my Crown 602b, and to this end it works quite well! Highly recommended, but if you already have A) a preamp, B) a D.I., and C) overdrive, it will be redundant. (I needed the DI and preamp, myself, and I like the overdrive a lot more than my Bass Drive). |

I got it because I have a custom bass on order that will have no electronics (not even a volume control) and just a single dual coil pickup with a switch between the two coils. I wanted the TH to be my tone shaping. We will see how that goes.
